Although it's been a while - the "ellzoy" site was dead
nuts. As of last spring you could park at the first
bridge bwyond the AT and walk the mile or so to the
Caribou Pond junction. I wouldn't really call it a
"bushwack" at this point - the flagging above the logging
roads was pretty substantial. Reminded me of a pretty
well worn herd-path on an ADK peak - although fall leaves
or snow could cover up a lot. That said - it could be an
easier climb in the winter going almost due west from the
road. Good luck.
