I use an altimeter, do not measure distances. We were almost certainly going faster than a mile an hour.

Very obvious, on my first trip we took a map bearing from it to the east summit and followed it. I also remember that there was the start of a herd path which quickly disappeared.

On both trips we followed what seemed a reasonable bearing to hit the road considerably above the hairpin turn (300 feet higher as I recall). Getting to the herd path through the thick growth on the way up to to the east summit is a matter of luck.

A Google search for Mendon Peak will give you many other trip reports, there are other routes which seem to work as well as the one I describe.
