Welcome to the wonderful world of New England hiking. I think part of the pleasure of backpacking or doing long day hikes is the planning. With the WMG you can have a good time piecing together a hike. The Guide is also worth reading to get some background on the section you're thinking about - it has more personality than some guides while sticking to the useful information. (You also need to use your experience to interpret some of the descriptions as to difficulty- it probably overemphasizes the difficulty of some trails, such as Tuckermans Ravine, because so many people with little or no experience attempt it. But, you should definitely take the occasional warnings seriously.) For the Long trail in Vermont, which has some really great sections, try the Green Mountain Club Long Trail Guide. And for current conditions, try www.viewsfromthetop.com, which has lots of postings of current trail conditions and other comments about trails, etc.
