Yes, I have heard this, and as a teacher myself I also recommend that my dancers do this. BUT, I tell my dancers that they should not dance in these tight shoes until they have worn them in. To wear them in, dancers should walk around the house in the shoes, wear them while watching TV, and while not wearing them, put those shoe expanders inside (or coathangers work too). Some people also use leather softener which is available in shoe stores. The reason that we do this is because if a dancer buys a pair of soft shoes that fits like a normal pair of shoes, after a couple of classes they will look like clown shoes! Because soft shoes are made of such soft leather, it gives and stretches a lot. This actually makes the shoes more comfortable in the end because they fit your feet really snuggly like a second skin. I hope this explains the reasons behind your teachers suggestion. I was very lucky when I danced because I had a twin sister who could help me wear in my shoes!!
