Before I compete in Oireachtas, Nationals, etc I always buy a new pair of soft shoes and they are 2 sizes too small. I was told how to do this by a Champion dancer in our school when I moved into Prelims. I always dance in class and at practice with shoes that are not quite so snug but wearing the smaller shoe definately makes your feet look neater. It really doesn't hurt like you might imagine and by the time I have worn them in 3 or 4 feiseanna they are stretched out almost to my regular shoe size. I don't think you need to do it before you are in championship level though, so I wouldn't worry if I were you.
