Subject: I sold a dress from Australia to overseas and was asked by the buyer to put on box that I was returning the dress instead of saying I was selling to avoid them having to pay tax...I did but it did them no good as they were still charged $200 . I think customs are on to it.
In reply to: Who is the best overseas dressmaker to go with to avoid this. 's message, "If I order a dress from an overseas dressmaker will I need to pay duty. I have heard of a few that have and a few that haven’t." on Tue, May 21 2019, 18:25:32"

  • Referring to the latest post I forgot to mention that the dress I sold OS was for less than $1000 AUD.. -- Dance mum, Mon, May 27 2019, 17:37:13"
  • The $1000 cap is for items coming into Australia, if you export the destination country have their own value limits. The $1000 cap here is for items purchased overseas and being imported to Australia. If an item is purchased by a friend or relative in the originating country, declared at less than $1000 value and sent to you as a gift - No duty payable. Declare the value at $1050, Duty is payable.
