Subject: That's because duty is worked out on the declared value. Over and over again we see posted on these boards that marking a dress as a gift will avoid duty. This is incorrect and always has been. The only way to avoid paying duty on anything coming into Australia is to lie about the value which is of course illegal. Sending dresses is different, USA rarely checks packages so most get through, Canada and the UK are like Australia and check most but have a much lower threshold. The UK gift threshold is £36 for example, anything over that, duty will be charged
In reply to: Dance 's message, "Sorry that doesn't work in all countries..I put a letter in mine saying it was a gift and they still paid stamp duty" on Thu, May 30 2019, 10:10:13"
