Was stationed at Alpha 2/92 but had many friends in the 3/79 and in the 6/9. Also have found a photo taken from an airplane of Rivers Barracks in May of 1950 before the Mess Hall was built. And it really looks the same except the trees are all small and very few of them. Anyone feel free to email me with or for information or photos of Rivers as I have many myself.

Due to logistical problems, mostly funding and lack of response, we have had to make some changes to the Lance Reunion banquet dinner on Saturday, 1 July.

For those of you who RSVPed and sent in the money, don't worry...you will be fed!!! We are, however, moving the dinner to Mike's Sports Grill, 517 E. Gore Blvd, Lawton, OK. It's off of I-44 just west of the Highway Patrol station. We've got the back room starting at 1800 or 6:00pm until we get ready to leave, which means when they close at midnight, if any of you want to stay and visit. All banquet money will be returned, either at the door (so you can pay for your own food) for those attending, or mailed for those not coming (t-shirt orders mostly). Since we only had 12 T-shirt orders, we could not get the prices quoted for a larger, bulk order. Again, if you paid, your money will be refunded!!

If any of you would still like to come to the banquet and did not RSVP, there is no longer deadline. If you show up and have the cash, you can eat. We will have a menu limited to five entrees from the regular menu in order to get everyone fed as quickly as possible. There will be at least one chicken item, one beef item, one salad, one sandwich, and probably one pasta item. In other words, something for everyone!! Tea and sodas have free refills, but if you want beer or mixed drinks, it's pay as you go.

Guest speakers for the evening include COL Annie Baker, Commander of the USAFATC, CSM Bill High, CSM of the Field Artillery, and SFC(Ret) John Williams, the reunion coordinator. If you have pictures or mementos you'd like to bring, a table will be set up for displaying those items. Please put your name on everything you bring. Also, the floor will be opened at the end of the event for anyone who would like to say a few words regarding their time in a Lance unit.

The picnic at Ambrosia Springs on Sunday, 1300-1700, 2 July, is still a GO, no changes. Bring your own food, drinks, games, etc. and plan on having a great time of fellowship with your old Lance Buddies!!!

Hope to see you all there!!!

Hey Hardchargers. The Lance reunion here at Fort Sill is really gaining steam. Go to this website to check on the reunion. We need your support. Just the few of us here chatting about old times brings back a flood of good memories. Even today I suggested the idea of recreating the fire ponds from Crete at the picnic area.

I was stationed at A 3/79th FA from October 83 to Dec 85. We had a lot of great times there. Have been stationed back here in Giessen since 2001. Told a lot of people how this place used to be, the Big apple is gone, Pendelton Brks, Warhead site, Kirch gohns, all that has changed. It's really funny to think that my first duty station was in Giessen and my last one is here as well. Does anyone have a copy of the guidon from 3/79th? Seeing Rivers brings back memmories everyday when I drive past it. Hope to hear from some of the gang.

Like the snack bar.
I was a regular there for lunch (usually the worst meal in the mess hall... often consisting of warmed over Cs originally tinned for General Patton's army I think) which invariably consisted of a burger on toast, as the buns there were always as stale and dry as an artifact from an Egyptian mummy's tomb.
Thing is, they would slather mayo on it (gag!) automatically if you didn't stop em.

Later in the month with all of us broke, we'd usually have cokes and share a large fry between three or four of us. And there was always one guy in the group who'd ruin em by squirting catsup over em, something I found totally disgusting at first, so that I'd have to pick around for the dry ones, but gave up and eventually got used to it. So much so, that these days? I can't eat french frys without the stuff.

One of those acquired tastes that progresses to an addiction, apparently.

I didn't succumb to the same habit for mayonnaise on hamburgers, however.

Don't know if that was a German thing, or just something unique to that particular post snack bar.

I found a recent picture of Rivers on a web site called "Third Reich in Ruins" (www.thirdreichruins.com). From the Home page scroll down to "Miscellaneous". At the top of the Misc. page select "Miscellaneous Sites Part 3". On that page select "Winkelturm Bunkers". The object in the picture is the bomb shelter on the left side of the Parade Field (if you were facing the review stand). The Parade Ground is grown over and the 3/79th Barracks can be seen in the background.

Back in 66 the Barbershop had A lady and A man who at that time were pretty young and I belive they were married. I wonder if that could be the same guy that you younger guys had ?
We would on many evenings find out what the mess was serving and would opt to either the em-club for dinner or the post px snack bar, at least there we had A choice. And in the late evening the Pizza delivery guy would show up to deliver A pie someone ordered and alwaws had 5 or 6 extra on board and we would clean him out.
A few of us amature photographers would go to the photo lab to develope our works of art--- yea right..
Well we had fun.
Is the post theater still there ? We would go there in the evenings to see A movie. I guess you cant't even guess what that would cost. Does 25 cents sound good? not bad.
We had some pretty good shows at the em-club
Cant' for the life of me remember who they were but they were mostley music shows.

I was stationed in Giessen as Ayers Kaserne was closing, I was a MP plt. sgt. We would drive past the closed kaserne @ Butzbach and Rivers Bks. Rivers was a refugee center for desplaced people from the Balkans (Kosovo, Coatia, Slovenia, Serbia, etc.) It was fondly remembered by the locals. Giessen was remodeled in 95, closed almost entirely that same year, then reopened in 96 and redone and now the Army is saying it will close it again. Is the Army schizo or what??

Has anyone seen Rivers lately? I was stationed there from 86-90 (12 Grafs!) I stopped by last fall while I was traveling through on business. Rivers Barracks is Rivers Auto Mall now! The motorpool is the maint bay for several car dealerships. They kept some of the old structure up for memories sake, I imagine. The parade field was still there, although it was fenced off. I crawled through a hole in the fence and poked around, took some pics, etc. It was cool. A little spooky. The barracks were there still but not well maintained. The walkways and parade field were all grown over. That wooden stage on the parade field was still there but it was all rotten and falling apart. Very cool!

Hey Guys,

Did anybody ever go to a restaurant in Giessen called the Pferdestahl?
It was just off the strasse on the way to the Bahnhoff.
Right across some RR tracks after the Elephant toilet ( Germans name for the overpass walkway thing with 3 big holes )

They had the best Knochen in town. Knochen is German for bones. Pork ribs that is. I think they slow smoked them.
Real meaty with paprika and other spices.

Ein mal Knochen bitte mit kraut salat und ein bier bitte.

My mouth is watering just thinking about them.

Tried to make them here. Close but not the same.

I think the guy who owned the Pferdestahl also owned the restaurant at Shiffenberg.

If anyone ever goes visiting to Giessen stop by and see if the place is still there. Trust me you won't regret it.
Try and steal the recipe if you can.

I'll bet alot of people stationed at Rivers do not know (and I was 1 of the people) That it is named after SSG Ruben Rivers who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism in WW2 while serving in a tank battalion in france. after much research by a university in N.C. Also what most of us don't know is SSG Rivers was an African American! He is buried in the american cemetary in France.

Richard, I've got another great story that you've gotta remember!
LATRINE GUARD.
Remember when Norniellia was getting ready to ETS and he grabbed a turd out of the toilet and wrote FTA on the wall of the latrine?
Sgt Adams went nuts (understandibly - this wasn't supposed to in keeping with Esprit de "Corpse") and tried to get the MP's to come out and take fingerprints but Sgt Sampson and Sgt James had already got people to clean up the mess.
So Capt Adams stood us all at attention for hours "until someone fesses up" which never happened.
So he said that until further notice, we will have an extra duty of "Latrine Guard". Two people at a desk for each latrine 24 hours a day. This went on for a couple of weeks until Norniellia reached "the world" and called just to say "I done it - try to AR-15 me NOW!"
But the best part was that when you used the latrine, you had to requisition a roll of TP-1000 from the desk and have the stall checked after each use by the guard.
The requisition form that you had to sign had "time in- time out" and three choices for "use of the facilities" which you had to check. They were;
1. Shit
2. Piss
3. Jack Off
Of course everybody put down #3.
Am I lyin'?
Cause if I'm lyin I'm dyin!
