Did you know for awhile it was a refuge camp...I used to live near the Rivers Barracks and could hear the morning call and the evening call and the chanting of the soldiers running PT...when I was a little girl and before the Autobahn was built we(german kids) would creep through the forest to the barracks on the fence and would beg the GIs in our broken english " Do you have candy?". The GIs always had some goodies for us, but they also asked us:" Do you have a big sister?" I never knew what that meant in those days...but I do now...I also used to see the GIs stop by the IMBISS to get a Bratwurst and hang out drinking beer...I did go see the baracks in 2002 again and it was sad to see all the GIs gone...
My husband ws stationed there from 72-74 in the 2/92FA, maybe someone knows him or remembers him...LT Lingenfelder(spelling?) was his best man at the wedding...oh he also used to have a friend named Craig McDonald, actually there were two guys there with that name...one black and one white...he knew the white one, the funny thing was when he went back to Germany in 1975 he went to the gate and asked for McDonalds and the black one came out to see him, they both looked at each other and laughed because they realized it was a misunderstanding...
