I saw in another message you posted that you were reminiscing about a day on post when we would all go to the ballfield and there were events like the greased poll climb,
volleyball, baseball games, etc.
I think you must be remembering " Organization Day"
We held it every year to commemorate the day that the unit was originally oganized.
I remember the First Sergeant always telling us at formation that we did not have to be there but attendance was mandatory. Ha!
My favorite event was the one where the Loader transporter
operator ( Big crane looking thing on tracks for you civilians ) would try to get a steel trunion pin into the opening of a Jack Daniels bottle.
I think our PFC Barthlow won it one year.
Our German comrades from across the strasse would come and setup a field kitchen and they made a really good Kartoffle suppe. ( Potato soup )
I know a lot of guys complained about serving at the " Zoo"
Keep in mind it is in a GI's nature to bitch and complain.
I know I had some great times there.
Like anything else life is what you make of it.
Some guys would drink all weekend or smoke hash.
We called them barracks rats.
Others saw an opportunity to experience other cultures.
Not to mention keeping the world safe for Democracy.
