I have been designing and making these dresses for many years. Way back when pearls and rit dye was all we had.
Dresses have gone up in price , but so has milk and bread. I have made loaded $2500 dresses and made $500 dresses and I have always had the opinion that the cost was not near as important as how the color, fit and style suited the child regardless of how many stones are on it. Granted stones have nearly doubled in cost in the past years, but we can get a better grade of stone also. The new crystallized ones are just gorgeous! I hate it when people make remarks about all the money the seamstresses are taking to the bank. Wish someone could tell me where my money is?
If you keep a record of all the hours you put in to a dress, starting with that long long phone call that goes on forever while you listen to ideas and describing over the phone what they want. Thank goodness for email when they can send you a picture , put measurements in writing , and I can send them a picture or pictures of the dress in progress so there are no surprises when they get it. The hours start there , then you have the dying and drying of all the fabrics, sewing for days just getting it ready to stone. All the glittering, stoning and detailing just takes time. To be honest, I try to make $20 an hour but usually come no where near that. So, if you don't like my prices I say learn to make these yourself. I pay a plumber more than that to clean my drains, and that's because I pay for his knowledge. thanks
