Nativity dark

The Bayberry Candle

There was a time, when I was young,
When Christmas Eve was bright
With twinkling lights, and a candle's glow
That burned throughout the night.

The candle's life was spent back then,
Its light to 'show the way'
To hasten the arrival of
His celebrated day.

But years went by, and as I aged
I thought myself too wise
To put much stock in fairy tales -
In Prophecies - in lies.

"It's all for fun - it's all for kids -
It just gives folks a reason
To over-eat, and drink too much,
As they celebrate the season."

I thought I had to 'free' myself
From the Christmas Story -
From the Church, and thus, from God -
From the pomp and glory.

But now I see, I was not 'free'
But by cynicism bound -
To a different way of viewing things
I have come around.

And so, I thought you'd like to know
A candle shed its light
Over the porcelain Nativity
I set up for Christmas night -

And as it burned, I thought of you
And in the candle's glow
I gave Him thanks for the gifts He gave
And for the friends I've come to know ...
