O'Donnell Winterfeis -- Kathleen O'Neill Cowan, Fri, January 04, 04:26:27pm
The competitor list was updated with all paid entries on our website http://www.odonnellirishdance.com/2013%20competitors.html as of 10:00 pm last night.
If you are dancing figures at our feis, please make sure that your whole team has registered for figures as none of the dancers that have entered make a complete team as of 10:00 pm last night.
The feis committee has considered your requests to extend the entry dealine so that dancers can decide after they return to class if they are ready to dance their new steps or need to talk to their teachers before entering.
We have decided that mailed entries will close on January 7th and must be post marked by that date. After this date only online entry/payments will be accepted (no late fee) until January 14. After January 14th, there will be a $20.00 late fee for online entries/payment with a final closing date of January 18th.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email me by clicking on my name above.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the O'Donnell Winterfeis!

cleaning an irish dance dress -- julie, Wed, January 02, 01:36:38pm
Hello fellow irish dance moms- looking to clean my daughter's dress. Have you dry cleaned it before? How did it go or is this not the preferred way to clean a dress. I have no experience but the dress needs to be cleaned up. Any advise would be great. Top is velvet and covered in crystals.

Can anyone explain why the % who place in champs varies from feis to feis and even within a feis in the ECR? I have seen variations within a feis from 41% up to 50%. Some feis hover around 44% consistently, others 41% etc etc. Not looking to bash anyone or anything just never really understood why it varies. Maybe it is just how the numbers work out? Anyone have any ideas? -- simply curious (puzzled), Wed, January 02, 01:39:20pm

- After our feis in 2012, voluteers stayed until after midnight painting all stages with a non slip surface. Unfortunately this couldn't be done prior to the last feis as there was a 48 hours curing time. As for the venue, we had limited use of the fourth room that was used for Prelims last year but we now have full use of this room and the champ stage is being moved to this room to hopefully alleviate the noise from the both the Prelim and Champ campers. We received a lot of feed back (good and bad) on last years feis and have taken this into consideration when planing the 2013 feis. (NT) -- Kathleen O'Neill Cowan, Fri, December 28, 01:16:45pm

On the Eastern message board there is a post about Novice dancers placing first and not moving up in Jan of the following year. What is the rule in the ECR? -- Rule clarification, Fri, December 28, 10:25:55am
Does everyone wait to move up after they get multiple firsts? Or do they just move up at the beginning of the year? Do the firsts have to be in our region to count?
The eastern board mentions disqualification, etc as penalties - are other boards more strict than the ECR? Or is this a penalty for our dancers as well? They are saying the rules can not be over written by the TC.
[ Post a Reply to this Message ][ Edit | View ]
Replies:
- I believe the rule is that a novice dancer who places first in a particular dance can move that dance to Prizewinner as soon as they place 1st with the TC's permission but must move that dance to Prizewinner in January of the next year. (NT) -- irishmama, Fri, December 28, 01:28:46pm
- The post on the Eastern message board on this topic was removed per the request of the original poster. 2013 competitor lists are being posted so some people are looking these over so people are getting "outed" for breaking this rule so the rule breakers are getting testy. (NT) -- OP, Sun, December 30, 07:51:00pm
- We do what our TC tells us to do. She knows the rules! (NT) -- :), Mon, December 31, 07:50:25am
- The dancer with a first in Novice can move up at any time in that dance with their teacher's permission. Some teachers prefer their dancers to get multiple firsts in their dances before moving up. And you do not have to move up at the beginning of the year if you have a first in some (but not all) of your dances. It is up to your teacher when you move up. Some have dances in both Novice and PW and others do not. Just asked my TC, (NT) -- :), Thu, January 03, 08:16:18am

NAFC Championships -- Pat Watkins, Sun, December 30, 06:08:08pm
Tired of the cold weather and snow? (If you are in those northern areas) If you’re in the warmer climates come join us anyways in Orlando Florida for the first ever jointly held NAFC Championships. These Championships are normally held separately at different Feiseanna throughout the year but due to multiple requests we are trying this year to hold them all together at one site and on one day.
The NAFC Championships, the Gerry Campbell Senior Belt, the Robert Gabor Junior Trophy and the George Sweetnam Minor Trophy and the NAFC Music Scholarships will all be held Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the Hilton Orlando. The Hilton Orlando is a beautiful resort hotel with lots of amenities. For those of you that are not familiar with the Championships they are open to any Championship dancer who has placed 1st place in Open Championship in the year preceding the event so from Feb. 16, 2012 until Feb. 9, 2013. We will also offer a “step down the line” competition for these dancers in both soft and hard shoe.
For dancers who do not qualify for the Belt or Trophies we will be having Traditional Set dances on Sunday, Feb 17, 2013. In addition we will be offering grade exams for levels 1-6 during the day on Sunday and in the evening will offer grades 7-10.
Registrations are now being taken at eFeis.
Hotel rate is $149 a night and will available for 3 days prior and 3 days after the weekend. Go to our website: www.NorthAmericanFeisCommission.org for links to get this special hotel rate but hurry as once the rooms are sold out we will not be able to obtain more. The room rate ends on January 25th.
We have also been able to obtain discount fares for both Delta and United Airlines, information available on our website. In addition we have a discount for transportation from the airport to the hotel.
Like us on Facebook for updates: NAFC Championships

Just noticed. -- ., Fri, December 21, 03:39:20pm
O'Donnell feis closes regular registration on the 7th of January - that's 3 full weeks before the feis. Most dancers are just back to regular classes that week and many will be deciding if they are ready to feis new steps. Please reconsider this early closing date. Yes, I know we can register after that but with a "FEE" and frankly we're all tapped out at this time of year. Thanks!

- a one week extention would be perfect and there is on-line payment which should help (NT) -- .., Fri, December 21, 04:59:29pm
- Here's my take on why: Competition closes January 7 - one week for late entries -> January 14 -> one week to get the stage schedule prepared and approved by ECR - stage schedule goes for approval - more late registrations arrive by mail (no late fee included with payment) -> Jan 21 -> approved stage schedule has to be reworked because late late mailed entries have dancers that now cause splits or merged competitions to be split - stage schedule has to be reworked and/or reapproved - in the mean time everyone is complaining that the schedule isn't out yet -> January 23 schedule goes out. (NT) -- I know, I'm a feis volunteer too, Fri, December 21, 07:03:40pm
- I'm guessing they meant to type 30, but not sure (NT) -- :), Sat, December 22, 02:09:46pm
- Ok here's my 2 cents - leave registration open until the 14th and then get your schedule approved. Most feis leave the registration open right to the day of the comp anyway - with a late fee - as long as they are under their cap. Give us a break! (NT) -- ., Sat, December 22, 07:05:07pm

North Coast Feis Update 12-15 -- Irishmama. NCF Secretary, Sun, December 16, 07:18:28pm
Just a quick info update. We are currently only 50 dancers away from meeting our registration cap of 850. Of course, not everyone has paid, so we will continue to take registrations until we have 850 paid dancers. I am hoping that no dancer who wants to register will get closed out, so keep this in mind as you plan your payment to the feis. It also aids us, as a feis committee to know, sooner rather than later, how many dancers will be in each competition so we can plan awards, medals, etc appropriately. Figure dances need to be paid in full by our close date. Information on grade exam details will be emailed to all our exam participants well before the feis. A final list of adjudicators will be posted soon. Please know that the committee is working hard to ensure that everyone has a smooth and enjoyable day. Getting excited for Feb 2!!

O'DONNELL WINTERFEIS -- Kathleen O'Neill Cowan, Thu, December 13, 04:36:35pm
This is just a reminder to get your registration in for O’Donnell Winterfeis taking place on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Markham Fair Grounds, Markham, ON, Canada. It is open for registration on http://www.efeis.com with payment online or by mail. Registration closes January 7, 2012 so it might be a good idea to get them in before the hustle and bustle of the holidays so that your dancer doesn’t miss out.
We have listened to your suggestions and here are some changes for this year:
• Non-slip painted stages – 2 Champ stages – 4 Grade/Prelim-PW Set Stages
• Open Championship stage is being moved to the far room to cut down on noise from the traffic. We have the full room this year so there will be ample room for camping.
• OC/Prelim stages will begin at the beginning of the day
• Sashes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in both OC and Prelim
• Four full rooms this year - lots of room for camping
We will also again be having:
• Memento photo of your dancer for $2.00
• Same food vendor as previous years but with lots of turkey pies
• Designated dress resale area
• Free parking and hired parking attendants to assist in orderly parking
• Bank Machine on site

Bun Wig Dilemma -- Pulled out elastic, Wed, December 12, 02:57:04pm
Does anyone happen to have an idea on how one might get the elastic bungee thread back thru the net hem on the bun wigs?
I have tried several options that would normally work on other items, but the netting is making it quit difficult. It is a brand new bun, only worn a few times. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Attn: TCs and dancers planning on dancing figures at North Coast Feis: -- Irishmama, NCF Secy., Mon, December 10, 03:02:06pm
It is important for all dancers who are planning to be on teams to have all fees paid by the close date. Last year, we had a number of teams that were not complete as one or two dancers had not paid. I will not be taking payment for these on feis day, nor will I be refunding dancers whose teams are unable to dance due to being short one or two dancers. It is the teacher and the dancers responsibility to make certain that these are taken care of early on. Registration is a huge job and I want to have the front registration desk run as smoothly as possible on Feb 2, Please be aware of this before registering for figures. Thanks for your help.

Don't forget that if you have any Irish dance items to sell (such as dresses, boys vests, shoes, wigs, accessories) - you can list them for free on FeisDresses.com. It's a great time to list items that you might clear out and earn a bit of cash for the holidays. Also, a great place to shop. There are tiaras and other things for sale on the site as well. All businesses are welcome to add listings as well. The goal of the site is to help Irish dance families have a place to sell their items without having to pay to have them listed. We all spend enough for ID, so hopefully this helps families save some.

What is your perception of the ECRO results this year? -- Should I ask?, Fri, November 23, 05:56:05pm
I have heard more moms say that they thought their dd's results for the O. we're too low than moms that were happy with their results. This is coming from dancers who placed 5th and 25th. Seems more people are unhappy with their results. Is this the norm every year at O. and other majors?
I watched a few rounds and thought the results were fairly accurate IMO - the dancers were placed within a spot or two of how they should have placed. The last place dancers were accurately placed at the bottom and the top dancers were quite easy to spot as were some middle of the placing dancers.
Why do so many moms not believe their dd placed where they should?
Is this going to be an ongoing theme or is this out of ordinary?
I would like to hear from some TCs since I am assuming that they could shed some light on this since they are the experts. I was happy with my dd's results and I am not sure if all this negativity is what we are going to see going forward.

- The resultsvwete very inconsistent in many of the comps this year! Some usual top dancets placed much lower than usual. Marks were all over the place in many cases. (NT) -- TC, Sat, November 24, 07:23:09am
- There are always wonky marks from round to round...bottom and top and the middle from 3 judges for one dancer. What this means is the sport is subjective AND that at this level it is almost impossible to sort out the mid range dancers correctly due to the number of entries. Yes the bottom are easy to spot as are the top, it's the middle that can really suffer in the mix and where the most upsetting judging errors are made. But its the sport. (NT) -- 2 cents, Sat, November 24, 08:30:51am
- Very well said 2 cents. (NT) -- It really is like that if you actually watch the whole competition., Sat, November 24, 11:56:37pm
- I could this being an issue if there are 100 entries to judge but in the ecr we saw some comps with 20 to 30 dancers so they should be able to jaccurately judge those numbers. How do the ADs judges a feis in grades where there are 20-30 dancers? (NT) -- Results - what to believe, Sun, November 25, 08:35:40am
- I did watch most of the competitions and my dd was "lost in the middle" which was only evident when results where examined. Some dancers inexplicably placed above her and then she impressed at times. Now if comps were filmed & THEN marked for true accuracy & not judged based on 2 minutes of real time & whatever politics comes into it then the results would be very different. But that's not ID & so dancers must work harder to separate themselves from the pack. At this level it's not what you can do, it's what you can't that gives judges the chance to make the snap decisions they must. (NT) -- 2 Cents Again!, Mon, November 26, 10:12:39am
- So do the TCS make excuses saying poor judging so that the parents don't think it was do to how their kid danced or was trained to dance? (NT) -- Just saying, Sat, November 24, 08:59:31am
- I felt the judging was fair this year. Coming from a dancer who did well but not as well as she had hoped. subjective art= you win some you lose some. (NT) -- Used to be retired, Sat, November 24, 09:43:01am
- And as we have heard before, it seems there will always be some favoritism from judges to certain dancers whether it is style, or teacher connections...it is a subjective sport and there are good judges, bad judges and unscrupulous ones too. It all factors in to the results. (NT) -- ;s, Sat, November 24, 09:57:13am
- Objectivity -- inside, Sat, November 24, 11:26:48am
- I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the results are only fair when my kid wins. (NT) -- ., Sat, November 24, 03:20:42pm
- I thought for the most part they were fair. I really liked seeing some different names movng through the ranks, and lots of small schools did very well. (NT) -- .., Sat, November 24, 06:22:18pm
- In my daughters comp the top 3 places had consistently (NT) -- top places (all in top 7) from all 9 judges, Wed, November 28, 08:39:40am
- Anyone notice that the judging didn't lie up with the local feis scores? Is that due to the fact that the judges were not local? (NT) -- Different results, Wed, November 28, 10:01:13am
- This usually happens at the Oireachtas. Some dancers perform better on feis stages, some perform better on majors stages. Many different factors. (NT) -- ., Wed, November 28, 10:30:41am
- including favoritism to specific schools and teachers! the sad truth of Irish dance judging (NT) -- l, Thu, November 29, 01:54:41pm
- Really? Sounds like sour grapes. I have found you always hear this complaint (NT) -- from schools/parents who need to justify why their child didn't place as well as they thought, Thu, November 29, 02:00:11pm
- I agree - my dd is not even her TC's favourite let alone some judge that she has never met and her school would not be considered a favourite as well - she earned her placement by working very hard, listening and trying to apply every correction she got. (NT) -- Hard work pays off, Thu, November 29, 03:47:41pm
- Absolutely agree. It might also help to remember that even if a dancer attends a so-called "favoured" school, they still won't get anywhere if they don't work hard. A name alone (NT) -- is not enough., Thu, November 29, 04:19:39pm
- You people must have your head in the sand if you don't realize that there is lots of favouritism and back scratching going on in this irish dance world. Lots is also perfectly fine and the judging makes sense. Some are not as obvious as others in their back scratching. It is not sour grapes it is 100% true. Teachers acknowledge that it happens. It is frustrating unfair and dishonest, but it happens. Look to other message boards and you will see the same comments. It happens, it sucks, but our kids love irish dancing. (NT) -- l, Sun, December 02, 12:17:12am
- Is this your view or your teacher's?? (NT) -- Pathetic either way. Blinders on. Open your eyes., Thu, November 29, 02:10:05pm
- Some schools gear their training and focus to peak at majors, feises often are testing grounds for new steps, etc. They always want to do well but realistically can't be totally ready at all times so majors are the priority. (NT) -- ., Wed, November 28, 12:50:21pm
- we don't even attend feisanna anymore. We go to majors. You can't predict results for a major based upon your local feis. TOTALLY different animals. (NT) -- ., Fri, November 30, 09:45:21am

Coming to Toronto just after New Year to return DD to U ofT - looking for lodging suggestions -- New England mom, Mon, November 26, 10:37:56am
... she plans to fly or ride train home for Christmas, but since her sibs will be off school till Jan. 7, we hope to drive her back and spend a couple of family days together in the city to check out her new digs and get to know Toronto. I figured I would inquire here about places where a family of four/five could stay, relatively close to the university, without spending an arm and a leg. Kitchen facilities would be a plus but not obligatory. Hubby stayed at Holiday Inn when he took her up there in Sept., but we are open to suggestions. Thank you in advance!

Yelling teachers -- Curious, 16:29:20 11/20/12 Tue
So after watching the movie Jig and the documentary the Big Jig, I'm curious.
Do most Irish dance teachers yell and scream? It seems like that's not 100% true, but does it make a difference as far as how much you feel like you're being pushed by your teacher?
Do you think the teachers of top schools are more on the side of yelling or not?
My teacher doesn't yell at all, and I'm wondering if that is why we are doing as well as we could. Does it help to be yelled that?

At times ours yell. But that is only when they are having a bad day (NT) -- :, 16:53:52 11/20/12 Tue
The distinction is btwn yelling at the dancing and yelling at the child. I've always had coaches who yelled, it was NEVER personal, it was always about bringing out the best performance and it ended when the lesson/practice ended - -- :-), 17:04:13 11/20/12 Tue
Absolutely right - one can be very softly-spoken while swearing and belittling a child, or one can be yelling "up up UP!" "sharp there!" "four more bars come on!". There is a huge difference between yelling out of meanness and yelling to emphasise and encourage. (NT) -- ., 03:42:46 11/21/12 Wed
My favorite moment in the "Jig" trailer has to be "Pick it up pick it up pick it up! Eight seconds" (NT) -- Loud and emphatic; not yelling, 07:02:29 11/21/12 Wed
My dd's TC yelled to be heard over the music, but it wasn't angry yelling. (NT) -- depends on tone of voice, 17:18:56 11/20/12 Tue
My TC rarely yells, usually only coming up to majors and only to correct us when the music's on. (NT) -- Love my school, 19:40:55 11/20/12 Tue
My TC doesn't yell. It might sound like it during hardshoe but she just raises her voice enough to be heard over the music. She is constantly giving us reminders while we dance and that's what pushes us, doesn't need to be yelling. (NT) -- love her!, 20:03:50 11/20/12 Tue

I agree... I didn't see any yelling during that show. - is talking very loudly yelling? is talking very loudly whilst giving instruction yelling? Is trying to motivate a dancer yelling? (NT) -- not yelling to me, 10:26:55 11/21/12 Wed
my dd just came out of class (3 days before O's) -- gettting ready for Oireachtas, 05:52:59 11/21/12 Wed
Dd has attended 2 schools in 15 years in Irish dance. At neither school did TCs yell. Sometimes they raise their voices to be heard above the sound of 24 pairs of hard shoes hitting the floor, but not ever in anger. I would never permit my child to attend a school where the TC shouts at her. I don't shout at her, so why should I allow a TC to? (NT) -- longtime ID mom, 08:53:45 11/21/12 Wed
Two dance schools in our city. One does great, the other struggles. The struggling school teachers tells their dancers that the other school teacher yells. Kids who transfer are always surprised when they discover yelling over the music is what is going on. (NT) -- ECR, 09:55:21 11/21/12 Wed
LOL!you could be describing my city in ECR. Our TC gets amazing results from transfer & original dancers but the other school in town scares all their dancers into believing our TC is a right B$^@h. She is NOT. She is a yeller to motivate us over the music and expects 100% from us as she gives us 100% and travels 3 hours each way to our classes. (NT) -- OtherTC threatened,so she lies, 13:07:40 11/21/12 Wed
Yes, yelling helps. Any parent knows there are rare times when you have to yell because complacency has set in and they don't get the seriousness of whatever you are addressing until they see the emotion from you. It doesn't have to be mean or degrading. My kids feel that if they are yelled at, then the tc cares and if not yelled at, doesn't care. (NT) -- Yelling helps!, 10:02:07 11/21/12 Wed
Wow, I feel lucky- my dd's teacher had each dancer dance by themselves for every dance this week, gave final constructive corrections, and dancers left classes feeling great! No yelling, just a positive attitude (NT) -- does wonders!, 11:50:30 11/21/12 Wed
Let's get things straight. Yelling or shouting at kids in anger is never to be tolerated. But an emphatic, "Kick. I've told you 15 times that you need to kick!" is sometimes what is called for. Have we sheltered our kids so much that they can't tell the difference -- ., 11:33:10 11/21/12 Wed
I don't think it's kids that don't know the difference - it's the parents themselves. Parents these days are too anxious to be their kids friends that they don't discipline them much, and as such can't take anyone else disciplining (or being straight with) their kids either. - Sounds familiar to me even though no school names mentioned. I'm sure this happens in many regions but telling your students the other teacher yells (in a bad way) to try and keep your students is a pretty sad measure. (NT) -- ECR, Wed, November 21, 10:43:43pm

North Coast Feis 2013 -- Irishmama. NCF Secretary, Tue, November 27, 09:51:37pm
The North Coast Feis will take place on Feb 2, 2013 and will open on Feisworx on Dec. 4, 2012. We will be returning to the IX Center in Cleveland again this year and are looking forward to another great feis! Payment may be made through Feisworx using a credit card or by check made out to the North Coast Feis, not to Feisworx. All checks must be in US funds. Competitions will be run PC, oldest to youngest, and OC, youngest to oldest. All OC dancers will dance three rounds. Dancers will be dancing two at a time. We will be offering a new Art and Soda Bread Competition that can be entered only on the day of the feis. There will be no fee for these this year.
The North Coast Feis will be offering Grade Exams again this year on Friday Feb 1 in the evening. Time will be announced. We are limiting our exams to two per dancer this year, with a cap of 50 exams. We would strongly encourage everyone to pay as they register for the exams as the system will allow no more once a cap of 50 PAID exams is reached. Those not paid at the time of the cap will be rejected. Please do not register for more than two exams, as we will need to refund for any amount above two. There will be no additions to our cap of 50 as we want to try and be done in a timely manner so all can be well rested for the feis the next morning.
There will be much more information forthcoming, and I will try and answer questions. Please understand that some of your questions may not be able to be answered until a little later. I will be posting hotel info very soon.
Hope all of you are as excited as we are for a great feis!!

- You can take a bus from Glasgow to Edinburgh that puts you right in the heart of Edinburgh and a short walk to Edinburgh Castle. You can also take a bus to another ruined castle (Craigmillar Castle) which is on the outskirts of Edinburgh and a gorgeous view from the top showing Arthur's Seat( Extinct volcano) and the city of Edinburgh at it's base. Worth a short bus ride! (NT) -- BTDT!, Sat, November 24, 01:44:38pm
- So if your there a weekend and have a day to travel, spend a day in Edinburgh (NT) -- is the bus ride to Edinburgh Castle a municipal bus or another tour bus?, Sat, November 24, 03:13:37pm
- Sorry, ment bus ride to Craigmillar Castle (NT) -- oops, Sat, November 24, 03:15:26pm
- Also go to Roselyn Chapel just a short city bus ride to the town of Rosyln near Penicuik. It was the chapel featured in the movie Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. There is a ruined castle there as well but not as spectacular as the others. The chapel itself is a magnificent work of art!. (NT) -- another fav!, Sat, November 24, 03:40:30pm
- There is also Holyrood which is the official residence of the Royal Family when they are in town. It is at the end of the Royal mile and open for tours when the Royals are not there. (NT) -- A castle of sorts.., Sat, November 24, 03:49:34pm
- That's great guys, keep it coming :) (NT) -- Gonna see some castles!! woohoo!!, Sat, November 24, 04:02:52pm
