Below is a statement issued by the SNU. My thinking on this is that if the Office of Fair Trading are involved then the law will apply only if a "trade" has taken place, eg a reading in exchange for something. Those who work in churches for no fee should have nothing to worry about, surely?
Fraudulent Mediums Act
The announcement by Government that the Fraudulent Mediums Act is to be repealed as from April 2008 is raising concern within the Spiritualist movement. Psychics and clairvoyants will become the subject of control by consumer law. If an individual supplies services for money or money's worth and the consumer deems those services to be "defective" then the consumer has a legal right to seek compensation and damages.
The consequences for Spiritualism, at the moment, we can only speculate. There are many questions unanswered by the repeal of the Fraudulent Mediums Act. The Spiritualist National Union on behalf of its churches and members has written to the Office of Fair Trading asking for guidance in relation to its activities within its churches and the Arthur Findlay College. It has invited the OFT to open a dialogue with the Union as a matter of urgency. We will keep you posted.
