Subject: HOW many wins?

I'm think'in we're ready for a new discussion, so here goes. . .

After the upcoming football season, how many wins would constitute a successful 2008 for you, and why?

For me, the answer is 8 wins.

I believe Lehigh has MANY things going for it that some fellow conference members do not have. I REALLY DO expect this program to win a couple more than it loses EVERY year. To me, .500 seasons are not acceptable in today's reality.

For 2008 -
Villanova (loss, Philadelphia home cook'in)
Cornell (loss, our dud performance)
Fordham (loss, their lucky day)

Your thoughts?

Six would be suitable, seven or more would be good. I like to be realistic, we are in the PL, these are students, and almost every team in the U.S. loses a couple that it should not, at least on paper, lose.
No more 49-point losses in the conference please.

Put me down for two - Georgetown and Bucknell. We need to get Towson back on the schedule.

From the loyal opposition who truly would love to see the ChickenSquawks to go 10-1 every year;

5 wins. Losses to Nova, Princeton, Fordham, Harvard, Colgate, Lafayette

Too many questions, especially on offense. A tough year for Coen. Don't lynch him just yet. Big turnaround in 2009.

I don't know if I'm ready to make a win-loss prediction, but I started to think about last season and how many missed opportunities were there. Specifically, how many errant throws or dropped passes were there that killed off drives and/or momentum? Could we do worse this year? I'm thinking, no. Yale, Colgate and Fordham were imminently winnable last year. Even Lafayette and Villanova could have been wins. Harvard should have been a loss and I don't think there is anything to say about Holy Cross. The defense looks to be even better this year and if the offense can do a little better than last year, I think it could be a successful season. I think we have to hope for a QB that can manage the game without major mistakes for the first half of the season and then blossom in the second half. Overall 7-4 would be satisfactory as long as #7 happens in Easton, while 8-3 would be a definite success. I see wins against Drake, Cornell, Princeton, Georgetown, Bucknell and Harvard. Losses to Yale and Villanova and up in the airs for Colgate, Fordham and Lafayette.

I do not think we can put any games in the ``win'' column yet. Georgeton and Bucknell, probably. After last year and the uncertainty at various spots, picking six games as wins is very optimistic.
It's fun to guess but beyond that this year is a huge question mark.

By not including it, I guess LU Hawker is just giving up the game against Holy Cross as hopeless!

Either that or he thinks Holy Cross changed it's name to Yale - which is not on Lehigh's schedule this year.

Either way I'll take the prediction to be a loss for Lehigh! ;-)

Yes, it IS rather early for predictions. I was just thinking along the lines of how will I evaluate the coming season after it's over.I'll need 8 wins for me to go away thinking "Well, I think we might be back now, so let's keep it going"!

Maybe I'm spoiled from a time when 8 wins per season was almost a given. That was fun.

Sorry I botched that. I knew we were going to New England two weekends in a row and put down Yale instead of HC. Yes, I think its a loss vs. HC - just not by 49 points this time.

Thanks LFN!

Coming from you, it's a special compliment. I'm just anxious for another season, and a successful one at that. I considered where I think this program is and the feeling I get about our relationship with these opponents, then came up with my (very early) prediction.

I find it fun. Looking forward to results from your site.

If O can be a mite more consistent with a few less injuries 8-3 would be reasonable. but given O's problems and lack of any perceptible direction on O 4-7 also possible

I'd be happy with a win on Nov. 22. Anything else beyond that is icing on the cake...

My how expectations have fallen. I guess most people are admitting there is a lack of talent and/or the coaching staff is unable to develop the talent that is currently on the roster. If this years team fails to win 6 games the entire staff should get the boot IMO. Personally i think anything less than 7 wins would be a major dissapointment.

The qb situation is a mess despite the one poster who must be the one kid's father.
The O-line, well it cannot be as bad as it was last year, literally getting thrown around by some league opponents. That is not much praise though. Can't be as bad.
There is no solid reason for optimism among the receivers and o-back.
As for the defense, they ciould not stop teams when it mattered last year and gave up a point a minute in one game.
Some guys no doubt will develop into good players, it is a question of how many. As for the coaching, it is a mystery.
A winning record would be a big achievement.
