Back to the NCAA's for the 4th time in 5 years, the Lady Hawks topped off a 38-15-1 season with a convincing 15-hit, 10-3 win over the Leopards of Lafayette in final game of the Championship series this afternoon at Kaufman Field. Tournament MVP, Lisa Sweeney pitched to a 2.24 era over the four game run, striking out 37 while giving up but 5 base on balls. Oh yeah, she batted .556 in the tournament which saw Lehigh go 3-1 with wins over Bucknell, Army, and Lafayette. The Lady Hawks did drop this morning's first game to Lafayette but rebounded in the finale winning 10-3. The Mountain Hawks batted .378 over the four game playoff run; opponents hit .210 - all off of Sweeney who pitched 25 innings of ball. Lehigh will be one of 64 D-1 teams to compete for the NCAA Championship beginning this Thursday. Who they first play is anyone's guess. But not for long, the Selection Show will air on ESPNU at 10 o'clock tonight.

Good luck, Ladies!

LU draws 12th seeded Stanford (46-12) from Pacific-10 in opening round play this Friday up in Amherst, Mass. Official NCAA press release and brackets shown below:

I'm sure by now the coach of the Stanford Cardinals has ordered up the tapes from two years ago showing how Lehigh swept the Aggies of Texas A&M out of the tournament by identical scores of 4-3 in double-elim play before bowing out to Mass 4-6 and 0-3 in the Regional finals.

Good luck, Ladies.

Here's a look at the field:

Team / RPI (281 D-1 Teams)/ W-L Record

Standford / 13 / 45-10

UMass / 30 / 36-11

Princeton / 112 / 25-22

Lehigh / 149 / 35-14

While there's no doubt we are "playing up," let's not forget the fact that we already beat Princeton during the regular season (3-1 on 4/22), shut down a Top 100 Team (Maryland at College Park) 1-0, and have the best "Neutral Field" record (15-2) among those competing in Amherst this weekend. Of course, UMass is 13-0 at home this year and the team that put an end to our heroics (two wins over Texas A&M) in 2006.

It won't be easy, but I give us a chance in this the first round of the playoffs should Lisa Sweeney be on her game. Miss Sweeney, by the way, is ranked 4th in the Nation in Strike-out per 7 Innings of Play @ 10.7.

It appears by the number of posts that I'm the only one excited about this weekend's tournament - besides 808Lehigh, that is. Be that as it may, I believe others may care to know more about the tournament that gets underway this afternoon at 1 o'clock (just moved up in time!) as our Mountain Hawks take on the nation's 12th seeded Cardinal of Stanford. It's not every day that Lehigh - a youthful (10 freshmen and sophomores) non-scholarship program - gets to compete for a D-1 title and finds itself locked into regional play against one of the finest teams in the country, Stanford out of Pac-10. Should we emerge on top at the end of this weekend's double elim-play, the Lady Hawks will be the Sweet 16 and head south to Texas to compete in a Super Regional. For a complete report on what to expect, check out the link below - complete with the four team (Stanford, UMass, Princeton, and Lehigh) rosters and stats along with itune interviews of coaches and players.

As is so often the case in softball, the game begins and ends with pitching. Admittedly, there's a huge difference in the caliber of competition (Pac-10 vs Patriot), but here's a look of the Game One starters for Lehigh and Stanford:

LU
Lisa Sweeney
Jr.
5/7"
ERA 1.54
Record 25-4
Innings Pitched 195.1
K's 297
HR's 7
At Bats 712

STANFORD
Missy Penna
Jr.
5'10"
ERA 1.10
Record 34-10
Innings Pitched 299.2
K's 372
HR's 18
At Bats 1044

The coach of the Cardinal summarized his teams strengths as experience (five seniors)along with power in the middle with speed at the top of the lineup. He did say his team had struggled at times this year in getting timely hits to push across runs with runners in scoring position.

Looking for some intangibles that may weigh-in on the Lehigh side? How about rain in the forecast this afternoon and the affects a cross-country trip (two flights into Hartford, CT and a bus ride north to UMass) may have on the Stanford players.

For those interested, the game can be heard at lehighsports.com

Good luck to the Brown and White!

Congradulations to the womens softball team. They played their hearts out and put on a valient effort at this weekend's NCAA tournment. Softball has become the best guarded secret at Lehigh. The record of achievement over the last 5-7 years is second to NONE at Lehigh - mens or womens. Time to sign up the coach to a multi year big contract and spend on the faciltities and equipmnet. These kids kick BUTT! What's neat is that this years team is loaded with sophmores and juniors. next year could be the year they make it out of the regional for the first time. Lehigh has built a strong program and is attracting some very good talent. WAY TO GO! Fran, coaches, and team!

There is no need or particular return in spending much more on softball. Sorry folks that is the way the cookie crumbles.

What a shame - the most consistently successful program can't even get crumbled cookies let alone decent dugouts. The team they beat-TWICE-two years ago-T A&M-is now in the College World Series.
