Subject: Gast attends wrestling matches
In reply to: RichH 's message, "MOJO and MONEY" on 11:50:02 11/10/08 Mon

Gast was at the wrestle offs and yesterday's win over Maryland.

The wrestling team seems to have at least some of its MOJO back. As I have noted before, this is the sport that gets the most support from trustees and wealthy grads. Maybe that is why Gast attends.

Lehigh is probably the only school in the country to pay its wrestling coach more than its football coach.

Gast was in attendance at the Colgate football game as well. As far as I can tell she has attended almost all home football games. I only saw her a couple wrestling matches last year.
As for alumni support, I'm not sure of your statistics , but football certainly gets much more attendance and you don't need a few loaded sugar daddies, if many would just contribute a modest amount.

Gast was at Harvard, also.

It is fun for a president to attend event, hold forth, scmooze alums and, hopefully, see a win. This does not mean the person is actually supporting Athletics in the broad sense.
Showing up for a couple hours at a game is a far cry from doing the things that can actually create winnings programs like investing in coaching, program support, facilities, recruiting, etc.

There has to be an active decision to make relatively higher investments in athletics vs. other areas.

Someone please tell me why Gast is somehow the reason we can not consistently kick XPs this year.

Coen, by all accounts is a good guy and was a good co-ordinator--------but isn't getting it done as a head coach.

There is a fine line between winning consistenly and being average.

If Coen and his staff were a mere 5% better this season on offense/defense/special teams the team's record would be the inverse of 3-6.

Score 5% more points and give up 5% fewer points over the course of a game/season and the outcome of close games tilts in your favor.

Something as simple as making all our XPs, which every other coach can implement, has cost this team games.

Hopefully we can correct the problem and win the next two games so the players, who have played hard all season, can end on a high note.

I don't think anyone here is confusing the coach's performance and responsibilities with discourse regarding the President's support. They are mutually exclusive. So I don't see why we can't generally discuss the President's and Administration's level of support in addition to a critique of Coen & Staff.

I think we'd all prefer 5% better performance from Coen and the team this year as well as more support from the University.

LU in NJ-

Why is Coen responsible for the kicker missing XPs?

Simple - you don't like him, therefore everything that is wrong is his fault.

Lembo is gone, Coen is the HC, get used to it.

Coen is responsible for the kicker missing XPs because he didn't replace him after missed XPs time and time again. If I kept making mistakes at work, my boss would give my job to someone he could count on, because my sloppy work would reflect on him. Why is a football player any different? By the way, Lembo isn't totally gone. I saw him hanging around at Georgetown after the game, chatting with the older players.

>>>>>>>>>Coen is responsible for the same reason every head football coach is responsible for his team's performance.

I don't dislike Coen, I dislike seeing the team lose games they have the talent to win-------and I hold the head coach responsible because that's his job.

Nothing would make me happier than to see Coen become a winning coach in the tradition of Whitehead, Higgins, and Lembo, but it hasn't happened in three seasons of declining results.

The players put in countless hours and tremendous effort to represent Lehigh on Saturdays, and I believe they deserve better coaching than I've seen over the past three years.

No coach/coaching staff is perfect, but two losing seasons in a row is two too many.

Lembo isn't the issue, nor is Gast or Sterrett. Coen is the head coach and in my book, the head coach is accountable for a tram's performance.

Unless the team goes in the tank the next two weeks (which I don't believe will happen), Coen will be back next year to hopefully reap the benefits of four years of recruiting. I do think some staff upgrades are in order, however. Remember, Higgins had one winning season in his first four, and back to back losing seasons in 1996 and 1997 (5-6 and 4-7). Then, Stambaugh hit his stride, followed by Brant Hall, and the next four years were nirvana. Unlikely to be replicated again. However, I would like to think that corner will be turned. But if 2009 is a repeat, then I would suspect a change to occur.
