Signed late yesterday (7/22), Adam wasn't on the field at the Raven's Training Camp site this morning.

I can only assume Adam spent a considerable amount of time rehabbing his knee since leaving Arizona. Can anyone shed some light on Adam's comeback attempt?

Adam wasn't the only TE free agent the Ravens picked up yesterday. Add to the list the name of Aaron Walker, a 5th year pro out of Florida. One or both would appear to have a decent shot at the making the team, looking at the talent in-house as the Ravens get down to business:

Heaps - All Pro....drafted in 2001...Arizona State...tender hamstrings as practice got underway yesterday

Wilcox...2004 Free Agent...Appl. State...recovering from toe surgery...Games Played (51) / Games Started (16)

Sypniewski...drafted in 2001...Colorado University...out for the season with a knee injury

Vickers...2007 Free Agent...North Alabama...Games Played (8) / Games Started (2)

Nordin...2007 Free Agent...Northern Ill...making a switch to FB.

Good luck, Adam.

The Ravens must have had a roster spot open for a JERK! Bergen was the first name that came to mind.

Adam saw plenty of action in the Ravens' first pre-season contest last week against the Patriots. In fact, he was the only Ravens TE to haul down a pass....an eight-yarder over the middle in quarter number one. Sidelined and later released by the Cowboys due to injuries, Adam may have found a new home with the injury-riddled Tight End Ravens squad. At last count, there were 5 TEs in camp, many of whom have been watching from the sidelines. The crew consist of: Heaps (calf), Wilcox (foot), Walker (knee), Bergen, and recent addition, Keith Heinrich. The latter came over from Tampa two days ago to replace Lee Vickers (waived). The other TE you hear mentioned in Raven reports is Quinn Sypniewski who sits on Injured Reserve.

You'd think (what do I know) - in light of injuries to their star TE (Heaps) and those looking to hang on from last year (Wilcox and Walker) - that the Ravens brass will give Bergen and Heinrich every chance to impress during the upcoming games against Minnesota and St. Louis and perhaps nail down a spot on the 53-man roster.

Heinrich, a six year veteran of the NFL, saw limited action over the past two years with Tampa, playing is just four games and not recording a catch during either his 2006 or 2007 campaign. Prior to the Bucs, he spent four years with the Browns. His career stats: 9 catches for 65 yards.

Does anyone have first-hand knowledge of Adam's performance in camp or in pre-season action?

It looks good, from the Baltimore Sun today:

Adam Bergen, a third-year tight end out of Lehigh, has been filling in for the injured Todd Heap. Bergen has been playing well, and don't be surprised if he makes the roster. He has impressed some of the coaches.

"Not bad," said Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan. "Where is he from, Lehigh or something? He has a chance. Since Day 1, he has been catching balls. I don't know if it's speed or whatever, he's got a knack for getting open and catching the football. And he's a decent blocker. He has a chance of making this team."

Baltimore Sun writer, Jamieson Hensley, wrote in his July 20the article entitled, "Training Camp Breakdown: What to Watch"............

•Backup tight end: Daniel Wilcox vs. a cast of unknowns. This is more of a concern than a battle. Wilcox was limited this off season after having toe surgery. With Quinn Sypniewski out for the season with a knee injury, the Ravens need Wilcox to come back healthy or they will be hurting. The Ravens could wait until teams make their final cuts before addressing their No.3 tight end.

Of course, since then the Raven's meal ticket stationed at the end of the offensive line, TE Todd Heaps has been sidelined with calf muscle problems. Another hopeful, Aaron Walker continues to sit with a bad knee. So where does that leave Lehigh's Adam Bergen? On the bubble or a sure bet to make the team? After last night's performance, one can only hope - barring an injury - he'll be in the huddle or at least on the Raven sideline when the Bengels come to town to kick of the 2008 season on Sunday, Sept. 7th.

How did he do last night, you ask? Well.....

> he caught 6 passes (team high) for 35 yards

> he was the only TE to touch the ball

> he was on the receiving end of passes from each of the Raven QB hopefuls: Boller, Smith and Flacco

Keep it up, Adam!

TEs Todd Heaps and Daniel Wilcox returned to the practice field this morning. It would seem as if Bergen - despite his good showing in the two preseason games - might have his work cut out should he expect to make the team.

Here's a quick look at Daniel Wilcox, the guy Adam will probably have to beat-out should he wish to land the # 2 TE job. Of course, there's always a chance (perhaps likely, in light of the past injuries to Heaps and Wilcox) that the Ravens will enter regular season play with three TEs.

Daniel Wilcox
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 250
Years Pro: 6 (Jets, Bucs, and Ravens - 2004 Free Agent)
College: Appalachian State (wide receiver)
Games Played/Started: (2001, 1/0): (2003, 2/0); (2004, 16/5); (2005, 13/3); (2006, 14/6); (2007, 5/2) Total 51/16
Career Receptions/Yards/TDs: 71/551/6

Mike Duffy, Content Writer for baltimoreravens.com is quoted today as saying, "Wilcox took his first rep of 2008 after off-season surgery on a left toe injury. The tight end had been working diligently towards his return, as the Ravens have plugged in several subs for him and Heap during camp. “It’s not fun sitting out and watching a lot of guys rotate in and out of your position, not knowing whether or not you’ll get the opportunity to get your job back and earn that respect back. I’ve been a free agent from Day 1, and even when I signed my first contract, I always had that free-agent mindset. I go in every day and continue to play every day like it’s my last.”
