Subject: Drake Game - 1st quarter

Two series and two nice passes and two passing touchdowns - the first a nice throw to the tight end in the corner and second one a beauty for 85 yeards. It helps when wide open receivers are not over thrown.

Horrible weather conditions after the 2nd quarter. I stayed through it - the rain was coming down so hard that I believe there weren't 20 fumbled snaps. There were some bad punt snaps and FG snaps.

After the 1st quarter, Lehigh stopped using the shotgun offense and went under center handing it off to McGowan. Obviously, this was because of the conditions. Matt churned out some good yards. Maybe 180.

Don't want to be a synic here but this Drake football team would have a hard time competing in D3 around here with the likes of Muhlenburg etc.

Rain or no rain this game should have been 47-0.

The defense played very well against a totaly overmatched front line. They where in Drakes QB's face every play.

The offense should have been able to manhandle their D-line and open bigger holes for our backs. McGowen is a tough running back, but the other kid has the break away speed. Coaches did a nice job of letting the new QB throw some very short dump passes all day instead of letting him go down the middle. Villanova will not drop interceptions that are right in there arms.

Coen should not celebrate his first opening day "gimmie" victory to long, Villanova is right around the corner!

Dude. We had a back rush for 175.

You won 19-0 against a less than mediocre D3 team. 1st and goal and couldn't put in the end zone!

You had 1 good drive, the first one of the day and a second TD on a reciever that was open by 15 yards.

Okay, it was raining!

My point is, Villanova is no Drake, but if you want to feel good about a 19-0 score against a opponent like that, Good luck the rest of the way....

Was at the game. Defense looked awsome. The second half was awful - weather. It was hard for either team to even get the ball handed off.

McGowan had some nice holes to run through. Saw him quite a few times one on one with safeties and got tripped up on what might of been 3 or 4 real long runs. He looked good.
Overall it was hard to tell how good either team was because of the weather.

Defense held 'em to 125 and no points.

New QB was 9 for 11 and 146 before the storm.

McGowan rushed for 173 and we only had to throw one pass in a second half down pore. I'd say it was a solid day.

This was a nice win to open the season with. We were clearly a much stronger team, but there is a reason a rain game is called "the great equalizer"..with footing treacherous and ball handling conditions horrible you take what you get. Too bad we could try more stuff with the weather. Hope Bode and Walker are able to play next week. Walker's ankle didn't look good coming off the field.
Certainly a huge difference next week. But this game should have been helpful in getting Clark a comfort level as well as a number of the other sophs. who played.

Why the heck did this "crack" coaching staff have Walker and McGowen in the game with a minute left to possibly get injured like that?

A very good question indeed. Considering that we only list 4 RB's on the roster, protecting the top 2 guys would seem that much more prudent. Walker's to-be-determined injury scares me but at least McGowan held up to a Jordan Scott-level workload for a whole game.

Glad to see the win, even if the weather was a touch on the damp side and Drake was not a Top 25-calibre squad. The defense was solid although I would like to see a lot more pressure being put on the QB from players other than the DL. Hard to complain after a shutout, but I am concerned that we're going to see the same defensive philosophies as the last two seasons... more reaction than attacking. With the inexperienced secondary, more pressure has to be applied up front.

Offensively, not much to be said as the weather dictated what kind of game we were going to play. Upside of that is that Villanova doesn't get a good look at us on film. Maybe we'll see some new (or at least familiar to Air Lehigh fans...) wrinkles down on the Main Line next week.

I was very pleased with how the new grass surface held up. The drainage looks much improved over the old field. I didn't see lakes of mud or clumps of sod inside the lines. Great job by the school on addressing that situation. Now if we could do something about the scoreboard (no more message board w/ "Quickie Stats" and what not... perhaps the light bulbs for the rest of the board were scavenged from there?) and putting in some lights.

Coen hasn't changed his playbook in 3 years...

Left game at half time. Weather made it slopfest.

Thought both sides of the ball looked good in first half.

Glad you didn't have an opener like us. I think we might have the worst Colgate team in 20 years. We looked like a High School team last week.

[> Final analysis -- sundayamqb, 14:21:32 09/07/08 Sun

I watched on TV and was impressed with O and D early.

Clark did exhibit a strong arm; but I think Brett Favre, at 39, might be a more nimble scrambler. Definitely a lot of potential there. The pass to Fitzgerald, and his run after, reminded me a little of the pre-Coen offense.

The second half was as boring a half of LU football as you'll ever see. I hope it was only the weather.

In my book, if you're up 19 points on a team that CAN come back, you'd better put more on the board.

When was the last time a defense held the opposition to 7 yards rushing?

Clark is actually a pretty good runner. I believe the offense he ran in HS was a version of the spread. He's a pretty good athlete and given the chance can make some plays with his legs. I think he's going to be pretty good. He reminds me of a bigger Borda.

How did the band look? Did they perform at halftime?

Actually, the Marching 97 looked (and sounded) pretty good given the conditions. It looked like they were released from their game obligations after halftime but most of them stuck it out despite the downpour.

Incidentally... any word from Lurking Dog? Did he/she make it to the game? Not much PFL chest-thumping going on after that stinkfest.

The below is Lurking Dog's analysis of the game from the PFL board. He is such a tool. He says Drake beat themselves-- no Drake was terrible. He also says Jacksonville has the same level of talent as Lehigh-- sorry no they stink too

"I survived zombie tourists in Times Square, the Timothy Leary Memorial Tunnel (connecting terminals A & C) at Detroit Metro, and the creepy Northwest Airlines flight attendant who was lip-synching the safety presentation. 'Got back to KC last night.

My review of the game:

Yes, it was raining hard. No, there wasn't any excuse for the Drake offense.

Cole Ingle absolutely, positively could not grip the football. At one point, he threw a six yard pass end-over-end. I hope his injury isn't serious, but I fear the worst. I'm sure it will be several days before the Des Moines Register has any news.

So, we're looking at Ostermann at QB. The best thing about him is his ability to roll out and throw on the run. He has opportunities to get yardage with his feet, but he doesn't have the heart & soul of an Ira Vandever.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the redshirt come off one of the new QB recruits this year.

No running game. I didn't even see a glimmer.

This is not tailback by committee. It's Lahart all the time.

The defense was ok, with the exception of Hancock getting burned for the long touchdown. The rain saved him from getting tested again.

Green, Hunt, and Brooks had a game they can be proud of.

Regardless of a few questionable calls (where was the first FG attempt? Too high?), Drake beat itself.

Lehigh has talent comparable to JU. They gave Drake many chances to get on the board.

This looks like a long season for the Bulldogs. I hope Pugh is ok...but his injury looked bad."
