SECOND QUARTER PROVES COSTLY
Basketball: St. Francis boys' squad gets outscored by nine points in second period and drops Mission League contest on the road, 76-65.

WEST HILLS -- In a league as tough and tight as the Mission League, sometimes experience might make the difference between a win and a loss. The St. Francis High boys' basketball team's lack of it might have been its biggest hindrance in Friday night's game against Chaminade
The Golden Knights, who graduated all of their starters from last year's playoff squad, have learned their share of lessons through two league games, both losses. Their latest setback came at the hands of the Eagles, who defeated St. Francis, 76-65, at home.
"Every game is a game where we become better and we learn something else," St. Francis Coach John Jordan said. One hard lesson St. Francis (7-7, 0-2 in league) learned was how to handle full-court pressure.
The Golden Knights stayed with Chaminade (11-3, 1-1) for the first 10 minutes, even taking a 15-13 lead on Ray McDonough's first of three three-pointers with 6:58 left in the second quarter.
But then mistakes took its toll on St. Francis, which committed 20 first-half turnovers, most of which led to easy transition baskets for the Eagles.
"We haven't gotten beat in the transition game all year, but they beat us down the floor [Friday night]," Jordan said. "We played hard, but we made too many mistakes. A lot of those turnovers were unforced."
The Eagles not only controlled the game's tempo, but they also dominated the boards, especially Bucknell University-bound senior Zach Evans. The 6-foot-6 center grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. Evans finished with one less offensive rebound than St. Francis.
Evans also had 22 points, tying McDonough for game-high honors.
Said Jordan, who also received 10 points from R.J. Younker: "Rebounding is always an issue with us. We are strong, but we are not tall."
