Subject: 3.0v6 motor noise????

 I am looking at buying an 89 4runner from a friend of mine, it started a slight knock in the motor (181,000 miles) it runs fine, but it sounds like a lifter or some valve trouble, these are new to me, do the 3.0 engines have valvetrain trouble? Or is this more serious? It runs down the road okay, and it doesn't miss at all. When you pull off the road after driving a few miles it also lopes on the idle for a few minutes, then it smooths out, but at around 1,800 rpms. toyotas are new to me, so I have no clue, forgive me for my ignorance! Thanks!
