Subject: 1994 Toyota 4-Runner Problems

I have a 1994 4-Runner (105K). I have developed the following problems.
1)The transmission just started acting up. Transmission doesnt act right until the vehicle has reached approximately 25Mph. Getting it to 25MPh is a CHALLENGE sometimes. It's intermittant (comes and goes) after that, but runs okay. I have tried starting out in all gear configurations without any luck.
2)I also have a loud noise up in the front of the engine behind the large black cover (Timing Belt Cover, Im guessing). It seems to be sealed but with all the stuff crammed into the small space its hard to tell. The engine started running rough just after the noise started.
4)If the problem is a timing belt (besides the rough running engine) could this also be effecting my transmission?
Any helpful info will be appreciated.
