Date Posted: Sat, July 19 2008, 8:35:51 In reply to: NewToNudism 's message, "Santorini & Folegandros" on Tue, May 27 2008, 11:14:00 I just got back from Santorini & Folegandros. I was at Folegandros for the first time and I fell in love with the island. It's probably one of the most beautiful places on the Earth. Santorini: Unfortunately Cape Koulombos seems to be lost for naturism. Above the beach there is a new taverna and some apartments. We tried to be naked twice but the beach soon became crowded with textile families and we felt no longer comfortable there. Fortunately, there's a beach nearby where nudism is still practiced. You just have to turn left instead of right when you reach the sea. After some 20 meters you will see a nice bay and afterwards a very good beach with pumice cliffs which provide some shadow in the afternoons. You can get in/out of water easily. Everyone is naked. Occasionally there are some strange gawkers at the top of the cliff but we didn't really mind. Vlychada remains the best nudist beach on Santorini. In the area which is more then 2 km long there were less than 10 nudists. However, there is a new taverna at the far end of the beach and a textile crowd. I do hope there will be no more tavernas on the beach (which seems reasonable if you look at Google map for example). I tried to find some more beaches in the south and in the north of the island with no success. All three beaches near Akrotiri are littered with umbrellas and sunbeds (although it is extremely unpleasant to get to the one with the water-tunnel). Also, both beaches next to Oia are completely textile. Folegandros: A combination of a regular bus from Chora to Agali and a regular boat from Agali to Ag. Nikolaos killed the nudist nature of Ag. Nikolaos. It is really a big loss because Ag. Nikolaos is truly a wonderful beach. I protested twice by being naked (with some 2-5 other nude people) at the far end of the beach in the crowd of about 100-200 textiles. I must say there were no strange or disgusted looks (most tourist are French, Italian and Scandinavian) but on moments it felt uncomfortable. Also, the beach is almost empty before noon. Later I practiced a combination of morning Ag. Nikolaos and afternoon Fira. The people who walked from Agali (a 20 min walk) were usually naked, and the huge crowds that came with the boat were not. I really liked Fira beach. It takes about 45 minutes to walk from Chora to Fira (15 minutes of an asphalted road and 30 minutes downhill-a very good path passing a famous church). Alternatively, you can use the bus to Agali and then walk for about 10 minutes in the opposite direction of Ag. Nikolaos. It is a small beach which can accommodate less than 20 people, but completely nudist. Many textiles changed there mind after first 10 minutes on the beach and took their swimming suits off. It was an interesting experience observing people who were nudist obviously for the first time and extremely enjoyed it after some first uncomfortable moments. The beach is sheltered from all winds and has a clear and calm water. About a third of the beach is sandy and other parts are covered with larger pebbles and rocks. There is a lot of shade before 2 o'clock and the shelter from wind makes the umbrellas possible. Unfortunately there is some debris far behind the beach but it doesn't change the good experience. The beach itself is clean. Fira is the third cove south of Agali. The first one is textile, the second is empty, the fourth is a very small one. The fifth cove also seems promising but we didn't find a normal way to get to it. I also tried four consecutive beaches west of Karovastassi: Latinaki (a series of more than 10 coves), Vitsentzou, Pountaki and Livadi. We were alone naked for the whole day at Pountaki. However, the beaches are less then 10 minutes from the port and directly under an asphalted road. Also, meltemi (which is almost constant wind in the Cyclades) often makes the beaches unusable because of high waves and high sea level. The beaches are unimpressive. Livadi is a large beach with a camp nearby so it seems inappropriate for nudism. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
