Date Posted: Mon, July 21 2008, 17:25:02 Samothraki is not a very good island for nudism, but it is not impossible. In an earlier message on this site Hellasmale recalled being nude in the waterfalls of the rivers in 1999. This still goes on, but it is only practiced by hippies and New Age youngsters who sit on rocks or in cold pools socialising. One such place is upstream from the entrance to Mariva Hotel at Therma. There were usually nude couples at Kipos beach which is at the end of the road in the south-east of the island. Not on the main part of the beach, but there is a track that runs along the back of the beach to the left, and you can park along this and walk down to the water's edge. Unfortunately it is not a very attractive spot and all small pebbles, also it was sometimes too windy for parasols. All around the north and west of the island there are long, narrow pebble beaches where you can bathe, but they are not very secret and are used by Greek locals and visitors. (It is nearly all Greeks, there are very few foreign tourists). In the south, at the other end of the main road, is the beautiful sand and fine shingle Pachia Ammos beach. It is a very long drive from the port and much of the road goes up and down and around, and when you finally reach this remote beach you find a taverna that plays loud thumping dance music all day long. However, at the far end of the beach (where you can still hear the intrusive music) there are some low rocks you can hide behind, but you still have to be very discreet. One day there were 4 nude Austrians, 2 Greek and us there. Other days we had to stay covered up because there were Greek families and children close by. Most of these left the beach by 16:00, after which it was best. Over the headland, if you are fit you can get down to a cove with flat rock slabs, and further beyond this there are two deserted sand beaches that can only be reached by boat. If you speak Greek maybe you could get someone from the taverna to take you round. I tried to find ways down from above but it was too dangerous. Then, beyond a mountain ridge, is Vatos beach. Both Lonely Planet and the island website say it is "favoured by nudists". Sounds good? These are in fact hippies camping wild under the trees, and anyway you can only get to the beach by boat. The round-the-island trip boat takes them there as passengers, and takes them supplies on request. If you go on the trip, which is 18 euros, you only get around 3 hours there, together with all the other textiles from the boat. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
