We had a great time down that coast. We stayed in Makri Gialos and had a car, so had plenty of time to explore. Found lots of small coves and bays, some of which were unused until we got there, so they became nude beaches for the day.
We saw loads of small studios advertising rooms, even in July when we were there, so you shouldn't have any problems with accommodation.
Easiest way to get there is with Olympic Airways. We flew to Athens from the UK, then picked up the connecting flight to Sitia. From there it is a half hour drive to Xerocampus and the coast. Saves all the hassle of Heraklion and the drive from there. Sitia is a tiny, local, airport, so hardly any queues or aggrevation.
