Karpathos

Thanks for all the information that you have collectively provided. This was our third trip to the island, in as many years, so we feel that we know it fairly well by now.

We hired a car for 5 days this time, although we had no intention of going up to Olymbos, or to the beaches that are accessible from that road. We stayed in Lefkos again, which is a wonderful 'chill out' resort with a wonderful lack of pretensions! There are approximately 14 tavernas in the vicinity, some better than others but all with their own fans. The beaches are wonderful. As you walk north from the town, passed the Sarris Hotel, along the dirt track that skirts the cliff, there is the longer beach that is very popular, and further there is a sting of three smaller, more intimate, beaches that require a short scramble to get to, but are well worth the effort.

We headed for the south of the island, and the beaches near to the airport. The first day we went a small beach called Diamatria, between Kipos Alfarti and Amoopi. There is a sign post for the Poseiden Hotel, off the airport road, just follow that, and then keep on the road down to the back of the beach. There is a string of sunbeds, but the last three are separated from the rest by large boulders, and on the first day we went they were being used by nudists. However, when we returned the next, they had been infested by textiles, so we left.

There are a couple of small bays further on, accessible from a cliff top dirt track, an a further fine looking sweep of sand, but to reach these you would need to be agile and have a good head for heights! I’m afraid that I am in possession of neither of these qualities, so we continued our search.

We drove back towards the airport, taking the road marked Arkassa and turning left shortly after. This leads you around the airport perimeter turning towards the sea at the end of the runway. The tarmac road then turns right and there is an easy track to the sea directly ahead of you. That then forks left to Diakofti (lovely beaches but unfortunately infested with textiles, worth a visit for the Omelets from the Kanteena) and right.

We went down to the sea, and followed the track right. There are a string of small coves, and as always, whoever is first dictates the dress code. We went there for 4 days, and managed to find either a deserted one, or one that was already occupied by nudists. All are large enough to share with quite large numbers, so you won’t feel like you are encroaching on others space.

We also looked at the beaches near Aghios Theodoras. To get there follow the signs for Aghios Nickolias beach as you pass through Arkasa, and keep straight on to Agh T, instead of taking the left turn to Agh Nick. There are 2 beaches accessible from the headland, neither looked promising for nudity, and another approached from around the cliff top. There may be possibilities there but we never returned to find out.

Karpathos is beautiful, and has some fine beaches and places for nudity. They are in the process of completing a new airport building, so should become more accessible soon. Go now, while it is still fairly unspoiled!
