Subject: NEED INFO ON THE DRAIN\TUNNEL THAT RUNS UNDER CLAREMORE?

I AM LOOKING FOR INFO ON THE UNDERGROUND STORM DRAIN(?) THAT STARTS AT 6TH AND MISSOURI STREETS. THE BRIDGE THERE WAS BUILT BY THE WORK PROJECT IN 1938. WE OWN THE PURIFIED WATER STORE AT THAT CORNER AND HOPE TO RESTORE THE BRIDGE. IT IS BEAUTIFUL, BUT THE TOP IS INCOMPLETE. I CAN FIND NO INFO ON THIS OR PHOTOS OF WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE WHEN IT WAS BUILT. IF YOU HAVE ANY INFO, PLEASE E-MAIL ME. THANKS, SO MUCH! RAELYNNE @ COX.NET

When we were kids we took several expeditions underneath town through that very same tunnel, floodlights in hand, to the other side of town. It was always an adventure. Other than that, no, I'm sorry to say I don't have any pictures of what it used to look like.

I too as a teen, would use these "tunnels" for exploration, hiding and as a neat getaway. I never entered at the location on 6th street tho. I talked to "Hoopy" also known around town as Chester Baldwin. He was a Claremore Police officer, Detective and Lake Patrol over the years. He told me that he also played in the tunnels, and entered at the 6th street entrance. He is listed I think in the phone directory. He lives in Chelsea. He might have "something" of value or able to tell more about that specific area.

The entrance we used as kids (well there were several) One ran under the Courthouse, but also you could just walk in, down by the creek, there is a small out of the way park there. I do not know the name of the park, but it's been there for as long as I can remember. It's back behind Radio Shack, or Hodges Computer shop. There used to be a fast food place named "Andy's" and the park is/was directly behind that.

This has nothing to do with any of this, but it's a funny story I want to tell. Once while some friends and I were "in this tunnel" we had arrived at the "intersection below" the drainage tunnel split into several directions, one of which we took and when we got to the manhole cover, we could clearly hear someone up above. Thru the tiny opening in the cover, we could see a lady sitting in her car, door open and arm hanging out while she smoked a cig. She was sitting at an Attorney's office. We made noises and poked at her cig. from below...hehe. She didn't panic, but jumped and left immediately.

I remember a time we hauled some car batteries, jumper cables and lightbulbs down there. A boombox and sleeping bags etc...we stayed the night in there!!!!! What were we thinking? Ah to be a kid again.

Thanks for sharing your childhood experiences with the tunnel, Von. It sounds like you were even more adventurous that we were. :) I, too, remember having looked up at the people who were on the street above and wondering if they heard us when we yelled at them.
