I hate seeing people say pups can leave their mother at 6 weeks. This is NOT CORRECT! ! ! ! They should stay with mom until at least 8 weeks, and I usually won't let my German Shepherd pups go to their new homes until 10 weeks old. They learn SO MUCH from mom and their littermates during this time, and SOOO many behavior problems can be avoided later on by giving them this extra time with mom. They learn things like bite inhibition, how to interpret another dog's signals so they know when it's safe to approach and when it's not, they learn how to BE A DOG. This is CRITICAL learning and it DOES affect their behavior later on!

An added note:

In some states it is against the law to remove puppies from their mother before 8 weeks old.
