How do you know when your dog's water breaks? Do they break or leak?

My cocker spaniel is expecting any day - she is lying in her box, breathing heavier than usual, but does not appear to be in any distress. Her temp was 99.something all day yesterday, and has been 99. or 98. all day today. She has also had a clear, thick discharge all day. I read they go into labor withing 24 hours when their temp drops, but also that it may be 2-3 days after the discharge. Do I need to sit up with her tonight and watch her? I want to make sure I'm there when she starts.
