I am using a ATA 40 Gb HDD inside my 6400. It is partitioned into six partitions of 6.37 Gb. My memory from 20 years ago says that partitions should be less than 7 Gb, but perhaps it was 7 or less. Certainly not more than 7.
As for the USB mouse, sorry that is out of my league. I am using a USB mouse attached to a pci card. But your idea seems worth a try. My keyboard is the original.

I wish the newer Macs lasted as long as the 6400s.
