Hi John

I replaced PRAM battery and cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. There was no corrosion, no leak for what I can tell. Only a little "green rust" on the positive battery pin connector and on the brown connector near the battery (the one just behind the PCI riser). A really tiny amount. Under the battery, on the motherboard pcb, I didn't see any corrosion or damage.
After that the performa still didn't power up. After some tries (involving removing and reseating motherboard, putting and pulling cards, reseating rams) it started and it still works ;)

I did push the reset button on the motherboard, the clock is accurate, still keeps time after days of being unplugged. I tried different cables and wall sockets, and since I moved it to another room it's connected to an UPS.
I'm using a Apple extended keyboard with a round Apple ADB mouse. (I don't remember if those were the original Performa ones, or from a PowerMacintosh, but for sure they are genuine Apple products).

After (years ago) I got a video-cassette recorder to be repaired, and I found inside it a whole lot of toy cars, I always check inside any opening :D Nothing inside the floppy drive. Quite clean.

The only things I read from your reply that I didn't try is to play with the volume buttons, and to short out the battery connector pins on motherboard. The battery is hand made, I couldn't find a replacement one, so I made a 4.5V battery pack from 3 1.5v button cells in series. It keeps time, I assume it works.

The machine now have a HD, with OS9 installed. Maybe I can try OS8.

Thank you for the service manual, it's a great thing to keep around ;)

Thank you for your precious help and troubleshooting. It's simply great that this machine still have passionate people around the world.
