I went ahead and took it apart to clean. There was a fair amount of dust inside generally, and a bit of an oily sheen on the lens in particular, which cleaned right off on the first wipe with a cotton swab dampened with rubbing alcohol.

I put it back together and tested it again; now all of my test CD-Rs are working. Great!

Some notes about disassembling the drive itself (AppleCD 8x, Matsushita CR-506-C):

- Start with the drive open
- To remove the front of the drive tray, push the bottom out toward the front of the drive to release the tabs, then slide it up and off.
- To remove the tray, slide the tray out until it hits the normal stopping point; you'll see that a beige tab on the left side of the tray hits a stop which prevents the tray from going out any further. Use a small screwdriver to press the tab out of the way while sliding the tray to move the tray out past that point and remove the tray entirely from the drive.
- The top cover of the drive wraps around the sides and has four metal "feet" with screw holes in them that the bottom screws go into. To remove the top cover, look for the black plastic tabs next to the front left and back right "feet". You need to push these out of the way so the "feet" can slide up past them as the top cover slides straight up and off the drive.
