One thing to think of, too, and I think this is sometimes harder for men than it is for women, is that "your only friend" probably isn't true. I have received help from co-workers out of the blue when I did not even ask for it. And people I play poker with have been "there for me" sometimes. And, when my mother was dieing, I asked my uncle to ask around for people at his church to help me, and a couple of people showed up at my doorstep. I hate asking for help, but we all have times in our lives when we need to do it, and, there are a whole lot of people out there who have been in our shoes and feel good about returning to you something that somebody else gave them when they were in need. Those people don't always have to be "your best friend" or anything like that.
