Thank you all for your thoughtful responses... sorry I have not responded - busy with my 3 kids and one more coming :)

I still have not talked to my sons father (other mother?), from all evidence thus far, it seems that he intends to stay out of the picture for the duration of sons life... but you can never be sure that the other parent won't just decide to pop back into the picture. This is why I have not spoken derogatorily of him, nor have I lied to my son about him - though, I have avoided the truth. I just tell him that I don't know where he lives and don't have his phone number (both of which are true). I don't really know what else to tell him - I still don't feel he is emotionally ready to deal with the facts... also, considering his father is not in contact - why should i lay that on my 5yr old?
