Yes, you should lay it out for your 5-year-old. It never gets easier than it is now. He/she doesn't care who is gay or transgendered.

Keep it all age-appropriate. Use very short setences. Let him/her ask for more info and let them set the pace of the conversation. Expect that it will be in little bites and will be revisited many times.

Wouldn't you have wanted to be told much earlier than you were? That will be a legitimate desire from your child as well. Please respect it. It is a not something you need to hide. It hurts you and your child to stay in his closet.
