I read a question of this kind on a nurses' website. Some said it was easier, some said it made no difference at all.
One even said she was told not to try it at all in such a situation, but to wait for later.

Naturally, the subject of deliberately causing an erection was not mentioned, so I can't help you with that question.

Thanks for the link and your answers.
I wish they had talked a little more about it and talked about patients that were awake.
It would have been nice to hear.
It sounded like it kind of did not make a difference either way but might be a little easier if he did in a way because it is already in the right position.
So I wonder how many nurses use this to make it easier for them and I wonder if it hurts the patient more if he is awake and has an erection when they do it?

If you look at this video it will be obvious that this guy was hurting from the insertion. He may have become partially erect, it's difficult to tell, but erect or not, the passing of the tube through his urethra was painful. Here's how to find the video: The title of the clip is "Insertion of Male Catheter-Painful" so you can do a search on Youtube.com and it will be shown. Let us know what you think.

We would do both at the same time...give the guy an enema, which caused an immediate erection, and than made an insertion into his penis. It always worked and it was like killing to birds with one stone. It was kind of hard on the guy, but we achieved what we set out to do. "Mission Accomplished"
