I wasn't clear about that only junior high boys from the three junior highs in our district were there for sports physicals on one Saturday before school started. No high school boys were there for that. The high school sports physicals were on a different Saturday before school started. I don't think that any junior high kids were present for the high school exams unless they had a good reason for missing their junior high sports physical day. I don't remember any much younger kids present when I had my physicals in high school.
There were not enough coaches to supervise the exams so the schools had to use other male teachers. The coaches and teachers were throughout the gym and at least one was at each exam station. They didn't just stand around at the doors to the gym. That was mostly where the dads stood if they were in the gym at all. I remember walking into the gym each time where a coach would always tell us to pick a spot along the wall and strip to our underwear. Another coach or teacher would then walk along the walls telling the boys which line to get in and making sure that we had our physical exam card to present at each station.
Our dad was military and we grew up in schools near the bases where he was stationed so there were a lot of military kids like us in our schools. Many dads during that time were in the military or retired military. I assume that many of the coaches and teachers were too. No one was concerned about privacy for males during a group physical and there wasn't any reason to think that it was necessary. I wasn't traumatized by any lack of privacy. I grew up with two brothers and for most of our childhood we shared a bedroom and a bathroom. Into junior high, we sometimes shared a shower at home if we were in a hurry. It certainly wasn't any different than being in a gang shower at school.
As for standing in a line of boys in our briefs only for a sports physical, it didn't bother me and probably not most of the boys. We didn't like dropping our shorts for the hernia exam but that didn't have anything to do with showing our butts to the kids in that line or to whomever was walking by or standing there. All of us showed more that that in our locker rooms and gang showers. I don't know any kid, especially by high school, who didn't worry about getting a boner during a hernia check. The idea of a doctor checking our balls was weird but we had no choice and there were always consequences for disobeying.
