I was given 8mg of versed by my gastro because - as he put it - I was extremely nervous. Actually they almost canceled the colonoscopy because my blood pressure was so high from nerves. But that night I layed in bed and was curlled up in the fetal position and cried. I was depressed for days and could not stop crying. I am a guy, and I would never get versed for any reason ever again. It is a nasty drug that is used for patient control just to get you in and get you out. Good luck all.

John-8mg is ridiculous; I'm surprized that you didn't have long-lasting harm. Make sure that you speak personally to the doc who gave this drug to you; not to a nurse and let him know that he violated your trust. I'm getting sick of hearing so many true Versed horror stories. Did you know that Versed is used to subdue inmates? Also, it's given in most states before executions? Great stuff. Check out askapatient.com for Versed horror stories. Nobody is neutral about this drug...way too many people are being hurt by this stuff. I list it as a drug allergy, I say it gives me hives..just my decision. Funny thing, if you give most people a small dose, say 1mg and wait for it to work, it's great for anxiety. Start squirting 3, 4 5mg or more at one time (like most gastros do) into an IV and it's patient abuse in my opinion.

At the time I was 160 pounds, and 8 mg of Versed was definately excessive. I do not and will not ever go to that practice again. I have taken your route, but I now list all benzodiazepines as an allergy.

I did have one reaction to that much Versed. I was severly depressed for days. I would just lie in bed and cry. I had no reason why I was doing that until I called the doctors office and the nurse at the desk told me it was the result of too much Versed! She was shocked at how much I was given at my weight and height.

160lbs is about 73 kg and the "usual" dose of Versed for GI endoscopy is 0.5mg/kg: 73kg X 0.05mg/kg = 3.7mg....or about 3 to 4mg. based on weight alone. 8mg is a "yikes" amount for me; at least they told you the truth about what happened. I hear horror stories every day about gastros giving sedation with Versed; that's why we use propofol for sedation, it's faster, deeper with none of the unpleasant side-effects that you describe. The good news is that the Versed is way out of your system after 24 hours and it sounds like you are past this issue. Best,

I live in Utah and in my area there is only one Gastroenterolgy office and they only use Versed. Any ideas on how I can change any minds?

Unless they have a CRNA to administer propofol, you are probably out of luck. My husband had his first one with a little painkiller (fentanyl) only and his second with nothing; he did fine. Most gastros "insist" on sedation because the exam is easier and faster for them to do (truth: most guys are plumbed straighter than women and handle colonoscopy unsedated just fine.) Also, a lot of healthcare people get theirs unsedated, it's a "secret" option. I had a doc who was confident and gentle who did mine unsedated; a few gas pains but fine. And I had the option of propofol for free but skipped it.
