I checked the video again, and to answer your questions.

1. The catheter is not a red rubber one, but is a light violet; most of the new silicone coated ones are either a yellowish shade, or some other colour.

2. The size was medium, but gettting very close to being on the large size.

A possibility is that some of the betadine got into the meatus, and produced a burning that continued deeper as the catheter was placed.

A second possibility is that the lubricant used may have caused a more intense burning than usual as the catheter was placed. I did notice that the catheter was inserted rather quickly, and that a large amount of the lubricant had piled up around the meatus.

All of my expereince with the old red rubber ones were painful - the burning and probing and streaching were all felt each time. In the newer silicone coated ones, there was a lot less acutal pain. The only time I ever reacted to one passing through the prostate was the first or second time I had a new one inserted - that produced a jerk in one of my legs.

Hope this helps.

That explanation was very helpful. While the catheter was not the older red rubber one, the pain, as you implied, could have been caused by either a too-large catheter, a lack of anesthetic gel, a too fast insertion, or some betadine in the urethra, or any combination of these items.

Another question comes to mind, if I may. After the insertion was over and the man was no longer in pain,
was he a little turned on? It looks as though he might have been, just slightly, at the end of the video.

Can anyone explain why lubricating anesthetic gel is not routinely used. It is not included in the foley kit. I demanded to be concscious during the procedure(insertion of Foley Cath) prior to my surgery. You must give the Anesthetic gel time to take effect. It was totally painless for me, a male patient.
