Jean the frenchie, we knew that it was going to be something special during the draft physicals. At least we saw old soviet movies and documentaries where the draftees were naked. But still we were hoping that was in the old days and not now. Nobody of us boys wanted such experience so that we were shy even to discuss this possibility. When I started my physicals I was kinda relieved as the boys were wearing underwear. Not swimming speedo of course but better than naked as I thought was possible. The personnel who assisted all were adult males. I think there were retired military officers. They took a group of boys from the boardroom and brought them to the section where the medical examinations were held. Inside the hall where we undressed were other assistants. They gave us orders where and how far to undress and where to start with the exams. They also were wandering about the hall and could see what was on in the exam rooms. One assistant tried to stay at the door of the big exam room where we had to undo our underpants so that to make sure we did it straight away once we came in. When he was off, the girls at from the anthropometry station told us to do so. We were free to choose any station to go as long as we eventually submitted to all of them and the last station must be the general physician. After that we lined up to report to the commission. As I said, all the non-military assistants were males. But the doctors were mainly females. Just a psychiatrist and one of the two surgeons and one of the two dermatologists were males. All the nurses were young females, the youngest at the station for the anthropometry. The members of the commission were mixed males and females. In soviet union and I think in Ukraine now such a commission is formed by the chief of the local draft board – an officer, his deputies – also officers, head of the medical board – most experienced doctor, usually female, and several representatives from local council and other local authorities, as well the police and even the prosecutor office. We reported to the commission one by one, not in a group. When you come in you declare your name and a couple of formal phases. They greet you and start asking questions about you, your life, social activities you were involved, your interests and hobbies. Personally I felt very awkward to give answers standing before those people almost naked. In the end they asked me in which army forces I’d prefer to serve. I do not remember what I said as I was not keen to find myself in the army at all. I was a good student and a university was most likely for me rather than the army. Once you completed your med examination at 16 years old you were left for some time. If you were lucky enough or hard working so that you continued to a university after school, then you were spared from the army, especially if there was a military training at the university. Otherwise, once you’ve turned 18, you would be called for another, final medical draft examination and thereafter you would be recruited to the army for 2 years. Very rarely post graduate boys were recruited if they did not do a military training at university. When I was a 4th year student, a new law was introduced according to which university students of 2nd and 3rd years could be taken to the army for 2 years. After dismissal they continued their studies. I was lucky to just miss that opportunity. From time to time postgraduate boys and adults up to 45 or so would be called to the draft board for medical exams just to make sure they are still fit in case of global war. I saw them being examined. All the same as for us 16 yo boys.
