James Arthur Davis Jr., 79, a longtime pediatrician in Bethesda, died Jan. 6 of a heart ailment at St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown. He had lived in Washington most of his life until moving to Hollywood, in St. Mary's County, four years ago.

Dr. Davis practiced pediatric medicine for more than 40 years and had his own practice in Bethesda until 1995, when he joined the practice of Milton Werthmann. Dr. Davis retired from medicine in 1999.

"Jim's diagnostic skills were legend in the medical community, and he was called on by Children's Hospital numerous times to make diagnoses for particularly difficult cases," Werthmann said.

One of the last local physicians to make house calls, Dr. Davis visited patients at home throughout his career.

A native of Washington, Dr. Davis was a graduate of Gonzaga College High School. He received a bachelor's degree from Georgetown University in 1947 and graduated from Georgetown's medical school in 1951. He completed his internship at D.C. General Hospital, then participated in an Air Force public health program at Tulane University in New Orleans.

He was a physician stationed at Parks Air Force Base in California from 1952 to 1954, caring for returning Korean War veterans. He was a resident at Children's Hospital in Washington from 1954 to 1957. After receiving certification from the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Davis was the sole pediatrician at the Washington Clinic from 1957 to 1964.

He was affiliated with Children's Hospital, Columbia Hospital for Women, Georgetown University Hospital, Sibley Memorial Hospital, Holy Cross Hospital, Suburban Hospital and Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. He was a member of the Pediatric Clinical Staff Association of the Georgetown University Children's Medical Center for 40 years and, for a time, was on the admissions committee. He also was a member of the Pharmaceutical Committee at Children's Hospital.

Dr. Davis was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of the District of Columbia and the Montgomery-Prince George's Pediatric Society. He attended weekly rounds at Georgetown University Hospital to keep abreast of the latest medical techniques.

He was a lifelong member of the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Washington. He lived in the Chevy Chase section of the District until his move to Hollywood.

A daughter, Deborah Davis, died in 1954.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Peggy Hawkins Davis of Hollywood; seven children, Dorothy M. "Dottie" Davis of Germantown, James A. Davis III of Eugene, Ore., Kenneth M. Davis of Hollywood, Diane Gerber of Highland, Gregory Davis Sr. of Washington, Margaret E. Davis of Lusby and Michael Davis of Kensington; a sister, Nathalie Raedy of Oxon Hill; and 11 grandchildren.
