Date Posted: March 26, 2007 10:22:22 EDT Beniamo Andreatta, a former Christian Democrat minister in several governments who emerged unscathed from the corruption scandals of the early 1990s, died Monday in Bologna, Premier Romano Prodi's office said. He was 78. Andreatta had been in a coma for several years after collapsing in 1999 during a vote in the Chamber of Deputies. Starting in 1979, he served in several ministry posts, including those of finance and foreign affairs. In Prodi's first government, he was defense minister. Andreatta was also a driving force behind the formation of the center-left Olive Tree, now the largest grouping in the current Prodi government. The "Bribesville" kickback scandals of the early 1990s swept away virtually an entire political class that had dominated Italy since the end of World War II, including many Christian Democrats.
