William R. Cross Jr., a retired executive of the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company who served on philanthropic and corporate boards, died Friday at home in Waccabuc, N.Y. He was 85 and also had a home on Martha's Vineyard.

The cause was complications from Parkinson's disease, said his son William R. Cross 3rd.

Mr. Cross began his banking career in 1941 after graduating from Yale, joining Morgan Guaranty in 1959. He became executive vice president in 1973 and chairman of the credit policy committee in 1978, retiring in 1979.

He served on the board of The New York Times Company from 1973 to 1992. Until 1997, he was a longtime director and the president of the Jacob and Valeria Langeloth Foundation, which supports medical and geriatric programs.

William Redmond Cross Jr. was born April 26, 1917, in New York. He was a Navy lieutenant, junior grade, from 1943 to 1946, serving as a financial officer in Washington and later in Germany.

Besides his son William, of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass., Mr. Cross is survived by his wife, the former Sally Curtiss Smith; a daughter, Pauline Cross Reeve, of Concord, Mass.; a son, Frederic N. Cross, of Easton, Md.; two sisters, Mary N. Spence, of Princeton, N.J., and Lady Reigate, the former Emily Cross, of London; a brother, Dr. Richard J. Cross, of Princeton, and seven grandchildren.
