Date Posted: September 17, 2002 10:42:27 EDT William J. Lehrfeld, 66, a former Internal Revenue Service attorney and expert on tax law who chaired several tax sections of the American Bar Assn. and Federal Bar Assn., died of stomach cancer Thursday at his home in Washington, D.C. A lawyer in the 1960s for the IRS' exempt organizations and pension trust division, Lehrfeld then established a private practice to represent groups involving that area of income tax law. Among his clients were the Endocrine Society, Heritage Foundation, U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Washington Legal Foundation. He also served as a tax counsel in the 1997 House Ethics Committee investigation of then-Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.). The highly respected lawyer wrote more than 40 technical articles on tax law. Born in Brooklyn, Lehrfeld earned a degree in business administration at Lehigh University and a law degree at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. At the time of his death, he was counsel to the firm of Powell, Goldstein, Frazer & Murphy. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
