Angelo Buono Jr., whose killing of Los Angeles women in the 1970's earned him the name Hillside Strangler, has died in prison.

Mr. Buono, 67, was found dead on Saturday at Calipatria State Prison, said Bob Martinez, a spokesman for the Department of Corrections.

The cause of death was not immediately known, but Mr. Martinez said Mr. Buono had heart problems. There were no signs of trauma, and Mr. Buono was alone in his own cell when he died, Mr. Martinez said.

"He had assigned duties at the prison, and he was singled-celled because of the nature of his crime," he said. "There was nothing exceptional about his conduct in prison."

In November 1983, Mr. Buono was sentenced to life in prison with no parole after being convicted of killing nine young women and dumping their bodies on hillsides in the Los Angeles area.

His cousin, Kenneth Bianchi, pleaded guilty in five of the murders and testified against Mr. Buono. Mr. Bianchi is serving a life sentence in Washington State, where he killed two other women.

The two men were accused of kidnapping, raping, torturing and killing the women and girls, ages 12 to 28, in four months in 1977 and 1978.

The authorities said Mr. Buono and Mr. Bianchi, posing as police officers, stopped women in cars at night.
