Date Posted: September 24, 2002 1:45:38 EDT Walter L. Rubens, a former radio station owner and member of The Associated Press board of directors, died Monday after a long illness. He was 75. Rubens was the owner and general manager of radio station KOBE/KOPE in Las Cruces. He was appointed to the AP board in 1976, becoming one of the first broadcast members with full voting power. At the time, he was president-elect of The Associated Press Broadcasters Inc. He was on the corporate board until 1979. After serving in the Naval Reserve from 1944-46, Rubens attended Wesleyan University. He worked for radio stations in Chicago and Houston before acquiring and becoming general manager of KJET in Beaumont, Texas. He moved to Las Cruces in 1964 and purchased KOBE/KOPE.
