Liann,

We just finished up the first unit and will be beginning unit 2 this week. We've had a good time. We did a newspaper about Louis Braille and made a timeline book about communications. We did a page for each major discovery related to communications and she put the date, inventor, and a picture for each invention.

We really got into Braille and Morse code. Brittany has walkie talkies that can be used with Morse messages and she's been doing that a lot. She's also been punching messages in Braille.

I'm looking forward to transportation, but haven't found a good book to read for our book report. I told Brittany she could do Mouse and the Motorcycle since it was related to transportation, but she didn't take me seriously. I'd like to find a biography of the Wright brothers, since she loves biographies more than anything else.

I'm afraid some of the grammar for unit two will prove to be a little too much for Brittany since she's also dyslexic and so she struggles with language. I think what we're going to do is take it slower and focus on the types of sentences (statements, questions...) and spread it out more and not get to the more advanced sentence types (simple, complex, compound).

We generally spend about 1 1/2 hours on our regular school work. As a rule, Brittany whips through her work, so it goes pretty quickly. I'd like to integrate more field trips to tie in with the transportation. We recently went to a museum that had a conestoga wagon, so that's taken care of. I wish we had a car factory nearby, but usually they don't let kids go anyway, so I guess it wouldn't do us any good even if we had one. I guess we could go to a vintage car show. We used to have an old car and do the shows when she was little, and we still go occasionally, but we could turn it into a more learning experience.

I have this series of history books that are each about one event or topic of history and I discovered one of the books is all about conestoga wagons.

Our Bill's Dollar Store went out of business and we shopped a lot during the going out of business sale. We bought when it was 25% off, 40% off, 60% off, and finally 90% off. One day an employee asked why Brittany wasn't in school and I explained that we homeschooled. Then I told her we were on a field trip studying percentages. I don't know that she completely grasps percentages exactly, but she learned enough to get the general idea.

Like always, Laid Back Learning ran into snags. I got a laptop and wrote the whole book on the laptop, complete with cute graphics. Well, the publisher has this software setup where I send them my manuscript via an internet connection. Only my laptop doesn't have a modem so it had to be transferred to another computer. But then with the graphics, it was too big to fit on a disc. Then we realized that I'd used Microsoft Word to type it up and we didn't have Word on the other computer. So then we ran into problems when we tried to install it on the other computer, and in the process the formatting got off, so it's been a mess. It should be ready within the next few weeks, though.

Well, gotta run.
Happy Homeschooling!
Sharon
