Chapter 7

Pain.

Unending.

Unbearable.

Unearthly.

Excruciating pain.

Pain that engulfed her senses; overtaking every nerve ending, every synapse. Pain beyond tears, pain beyond words. Pain she had never imagined could be born.

This was all she knew. Not her name, not the reason she was here. Nothing existed except the pain. She didn’t know where she was or where the pain came from. She only knew the pain was.

The pain blinded her; leaving her adrift in a sea of agony. The wretched stink of it filled her nostrils. There was no escape. Like the sea it had an ebb and flow. It would tingle at the outermost reaches of her senses, coming closer, building and building upon itself until it was a tsunami of sensation.

She begged wordlessly for death. Pleaded soundlessly for unconsciousness. And despaired of ever finding both. There was no end. There was no beginning. There only was the pain.

Sara tossed in her sleep. Hopelessly trying to wake. Her skin was covered with a sweaty film as her body reacted to her mind’s horrifying sensory input. The Witchblade glowed with an eerie ruby light. Flashing in the darkness of her room. Mingling in her mind’s eye with hellish intensity.

Her mouth moved, but no words did it utter. She was beyond words. Trapped in the dream of pain. One of the three re-occurring, nightmarish visions The Witchblade cursed her with night after endless night.

She had thought the waking from the dream of pleasure was hard. She would give anything at this moment to wake from it rather than be caught in this twisted dream of pain that refused to release her from its grasp.

From the depths of her soul, trapped in the vision she finally found words; words that boiled to the surface without her control. Words that echoed in the still quiet of her dark room. Words that she didn’t know to whom or what she directed them to.

“Why have you forsaken me?”

There was no answer to her cry. Only more of the terrible, unearthly, excruciating, undending pain.
