Italy's team manager Marco Bollesan and media officer Giacomo Mazzocchi were involved in a head-on crash in Canberra this week, which left them with minor injuries and sidelined an official Rugby World Cup vehicle.
Mazzocchi, 63, was driving the new silver World Cup official car on the wrong side of the single-lane road on Monday.
A four-wheel-drive travelling in the opposite direction saw the Italians and swerved to try and avoid a crash.
But Mazzocchi had the same idea.
"The two cars swerved on to the same shoulder and collided head on," an Australian Federal Police spokesman said.
He said the World Cup car had major damage to its engine and was unroadworthy while the 4WD had minor damage to the front.
Police and ambulance officers attended the scene.
Bollesan, 62, received cuts to his left leg.
Mazzocchi told police he was inadvertently driving on the right-hand side of the road, just as he does at home in Italy.
The pair joked about the crash following Italy's World Cup win over Tonga last night but Bollesan swore he would never again travel with Mazzocchi.
"I'm getting better after the car crash ... so I don't want to get in a car with him ever again," he said.
"But I'm on the mend."
Prior to Italy's 70-7 mauling by New Zealand on Saturday, Kirwan told his players to play like they drive – with aggression, flair and unpredictability.
Needless to say, he made the comments in the presence of Mazzocchi and Bollesan.
