I highly recommend Math-You-See. It is basic and yet teaches everything, including algebra and geometry. It is a hands-on program. Videos come with it which helps, because the guy basically teaches your child! The child can work at his/your own pace. There is a teacher's manual with all the answers and tests. By the way, I got Ds in high school (and grade school, for that matter) math--my daughter, who wasn't doing so great before Math-You-See, is now Acing most of her tests! I hope this is helpful.
As far as composition, you might just want to buy a handbook such as Write Source, and have him write, write, write! creatively, maybe about subjects he is interested in. You could also get the Abeka language books to add language lessons to the writing. KONOS unit studies also has a curriculum in which your child writes their own novel-yes, novel!-while learning basic language skills.
Hope this helps!
